May 2022 hatch along

I’ve finally got a broody! I’ve had a few false alarms but this one seem committed! I’ll be giving her some assorted colored eggs tomorrow around noon.

I candled today (day 10) and had consistent-sized air sacs. I'm a little worried that they are on the small size, but I will check again at day 14. They are larger than they were on day 6, but I didn't mark them then. Humidity is running about 49% with the NR360. I don't want to run the humidity too high, but I also don't want to dehydrate the chicks. Everything still looked to be alive, and I could still see vascularization and movement. Maybe someone with more experience hatching can comment on the relative size of the air sacs on the eggs below? I will candle again on day 14 and on day 18 as the eggs go into lockdown.

They look slightly small…you could probably afford to let the humidity go down a bit lower. I don’t know where you are, but I run mine around 37% until 3 days prior to hatch day. I think you'd be fine either way :) if there’s still not a big enough drawdown by lockdown, just keep lockdown slightly lower than you might normally. I keep lockdown at around 65-70%. :)

I did do a quick peek at the ones under my broody but didn't mark anything. But the one darker one I peeked at looked half dark, like really dark, and half light... They are day 7 so why would it look like that?
They can look that way when the egg shell is a bit dark. The baby chick creates a shadow where it’s developing when you can’t see clearly thru the shell. I have a couple Marans eggs that are just like that and I figure I just gotta hope things are good! :)
