May 2023 Hatch-a-long

FYI anyone who's setting eggs today or tomorrow: Listen up!
Hatch date will be May 4th or 5th, and that's nacho ordinary day! Let's shell-ibrate and have an eggcelent time for Cinco de Mayo, chickitas! I made a Hatch-Along just for Cinco de Mayo chicks, here:

You had me sold on the full moon hatch thing already & now a special thread!

I got all my eggs settled in. I set 9 runner duck eggs (shipped, from eBay) 13 quail eggs (hatching april 30th) and a tray of 96 chicken eggs for coco de mayo/ full moon These are from my flock and should have some fun mixes.

Alright, I finally had the motivation to join this!
I have three broody's, will introduce them in a minute, and 11 eggs due to hatch May 2nd in the incubator. Those 11 eggs are all orpingtons, specifically 6 chocolate, 3 lavender, and 2 blue. (I had 12, and there would have been another blue but it had a hairline crack so i didnt set it. ) They will be on day 4 this afternoon. I candled them last night, and 8 had dark yolks, no development of veins yet though. The other 3, nothing stood out.
Now, the broody's.
Broody #1: Jacie the bym, 6 eggs.

Broody #2: Arlene the EE, with 6 eggs.

Broody #3: Pebbles the splash bantam Silkie, 5 eggs.

Jacie has all silkie eggs. Arlene I know has 2 silkie eggs, unsure who laid the other 4. Pebbles has 2 silkie, either a legbar or an ameraucana egg, and two Creme Penedesenca eggs. None of these eggs will be purebred when/if they hatch. I candled them last night, 4 of Jacie's have veining, 2 are clear, all 6 of Arlene's have dark yolks, and all of Pebbles' do too.

I will join up here although I haven’t set my eggs yet. Planning to set eggs in a week as soon as my current hatch finishes. I will hopefully be hatching with broodies and an incubator again, hopefully things go better with this hatch!

Candled my OEGB eggs, even though it was only day three, and some were showing development. OEGB are notoriously bad for fertility/hatching though. 50% is the usual expected hatch rate.

I thought I was only going to be in the March thread. Then I ended up in the April one and now here, too! I have no idea how this is going to go but I have 7 eggs under my first ever broody hen.

Here is Moonsparkle. Her eggs are on day 3 so due to hatch around the 4th of May.

Why so low?

I don't know, but any description I've read says this. They also don't lay many per year, so if I can I try to take advantage of the ones that do get laid. Maybe it's because of their size?

I did hatch a bunch back in December and it was pretty much bang on 50%!

Candled my orpington eggs, day 6 around 3:00pm today ET.
Some looked like this!
(One of the lavender orp's eggs.)

And 2 looked like this
(Another Lavender Orp egg)

And some i couldn't tell as they have darker shells, but do have dark yolks. From what i can tell though, i think 9 may have development.
