May 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
My eggs shipped today...(7hrs away) hope I have a better hatch rate this time (none made it last time)...I attribute it shipping since the box came all the way from AZ to IL not marked fragile.

I am hoping some of mine hatch this time. I am looking for 3 or so BR roos. 🤞🤞🤞

Can I join?
I don't think you need permission to join. The more the merrier! 🐣

Sorry about your last hatch. Did you let the seller know?

Hopefully this one will go really well for you. Did you read up on here about tips for hatching shipped eggs?

I did let the seller know. The seller actually approached me abt the lack of fragile label, offering a replacement if things didn't go well.

When I approached the seller, they stated they would send me "free" eggs for the cost of shipping. I told them I didn't feel as though I should have to pay shipping again as I paid for it the first time and the seller messed up.

Long story short...ebay refunded my money.

I have read up on hatching shipped eggs on the Sally Sunshine threads. I plan to let them rest 12-24hrs based on what air cells look like. I ordered from a shipper closer to me and have spoken to the post office already and asked them to hold and call me when the eggs arrived. I have spoken to seller and have asked for freshly laid eggs (morning of shipment) and to have my box overly marked fragile. I have reset up my incubator, and have it running already (eggs to ship on Monday) Took the turners out, and plan to hand turn starting day 5. I plan to incubate fat end up in styrofoam egg cartons. I have upped the temp from 99.5 to 100.5 as I have a forced air incubator. I also plan to start with a lower humidity, adjusting as I keep track of air sack growth.

I'll be reading up on it some more to ensure the best possible hatch

It is common for them to resend only for cost of shipping since even if marked fragile they can get messed up in shipping. The 2nd seller I found was like that. She refused to mark them fragile stating the PO near her is rougher if marked fragile. I actually tried again and only got half off the eggs, not sure why I tried again. But that time only one started, the time before none......

I now have a great seller and stick with her.

I still have four chocolate orp's doing well, as well as two lav's and two blue's. Hatch date is tuesday, wish me luck on all making it!
Day 17:
Candled my broodies eggs wednesday.
Jacie has 5 eggs (Only one was bad (infertile)) All silkie as she started with of course.
Arlene has only 2 eggs. 😓. She orginally had 6, but 1 we found smashed last week ( Was fertile at that), 2 were infertile, and 1 was a quitter. At least the 2 that remain are alive. Figured out that she has a buff brahma egg and I'm pretty sure her other one is am easter egger, could be my smaller cream legbar's egg though.
Pebbles has 4 eggs, out of 5. Two Creme Penedesenca eggs, an ameraucana, and a silkie.

Ok I need to figure out what to do. My eggs in the incubator go into lockdown on Mon and are due to hatch on Thurs. Last time they hatched on day 19/20.

The lady that has crested cream legbars is going to be near me tomorrow so is bringing eggs for me. Do I start them in the incubator where humidity will be higher on days 2-5 for them and they will get bounced around? Or do I give them to my broody that hatched and raised chicks last year and hope that they are fine......

🤔 How many eggs? The higher humidity for a few days shouldn’t be a problem as it’s easy enough to run it dryer for a bit afterwards to compensate. If your broody is dependable and it’s not too many eggs that route could work too.

She was dependable last year, but my year old hens have been jerks when my other year old hens when they were broody. One of them broke the other girls eggs, then one was in the nest box right after one hatched and pecked the chicks.... Those broodys weren't proven though. This one did raise chicks last year and was good but she has let others in the nest box with her....

Oh man…broody drama… I’d take my chances with the incubator 😂
