May 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
My last one hatched last night. 16 total.

I have 2 separate boxes they are in with a window inbetween. So the smaller younger chicks don't get so trampled by the bigger active chicks...(the black chick in the second pic next to the bottom of the pic, is the chick that had dragged around the shell stretching the insides a bit. the cord-contends dried, and the egg is still stuck to it. That chick also has a bum leg. I am not a hobbler though. it is in a quiet pen, hopefully will get better, it is drinking on it's own.)

All and all a great hatch. From a still air foam incubator, that has been working since Dec.

I hatched 3 AC in December, along with a mosaic that looks just like an AC. ( they were from the same blood line.) I have had AC before, they were stand offish. These are pretty friendly though.

So since the mosaic looks just like and AC imagine that with really dark green egg. Also the other ACs are laying a dark brown egg. Maybe the eggs will lighten soon.

Just put my eggs in lockdown! 34 total in 2 incubators. A few are a day behind, but I don’t think that will make too much difference. Since I am taking my newborn brooder (rubbermaid bin with side cut out and mesh over it) to school for my classroom hatch next week, I had to prepare a dog crate for this group. My newborns only stay in it for a max of 3 days when I sell, but the 8 silkies will be staying for awhile, and won’t be crowded once the rest are gone! This is the first hatch this year that I am keeping any chicks, so I’m super excited! DH says keep 2 pullet silkies (one for my son & one for me), along with the chicks coming next month…i say maaaaaybe 3 and a cockerel if he is on the quiet side! 😂 We will see who wins this…either way all 8 are staying for awhile so I can (hopefully) sex them in a few months. Fingers crossed for more girls than boys, so at least I can sell the rest in pairs…
