May get DUCKS!!!

Hah! I like the "i wished them offered sexed eggs" part :lau

I have some WH. And my hens are laying like CRAZY! I love them! Lol

When do the WH lay? This will help decide when I get them.
But really, one guy I met said he sold fertile eggs that hatched all females.

That's perfect! That's just the time we are going to want ducks, when our egg business has grown! Our website isup now (sherborneggs.com) and all the girlls will be laying and we should be at peak growth then, so. Its perfect. I may get ducklings this month for that reason. Maybe week of 23rd

Also iswitched to meyer. Metzer racks up the price if u don't order 10ducks or something. Decided to get:

1 chocolate runner for blue eggs
2 welsh harlequin see first post
And 1 mallard drake for fertile eggos

Actually realized ducks are loud. So just 1WH one choclate runner and one mallard (fem, fem, male, respectively)
actually didnt compare the two until just now. save 2$ on metzer. SWITCHING BACK

Feel so different now.
Also, is it just me or do ducks have like no breeds compared to chickens?

can a call duck mate and produce hatchable eggs with a WH? i am thinking of Call drake. But some breeds have different amounts of chromosomes andstuff. doing research now about if compatility.

Pekin ducks do not generally go broody. But you may get lucky enough to have a broody pekin. Last year I had three pekins and a cayuga. Cayugas usually will go broody, so I left her eggs outside. Although, I had one of my pekins laying in the same nest. I was taking the pekin eggs and leaving the cayuga eggs. Well, one day, I woke up to my neighbor coming over and saying that some ducks were playing in a puddle next to his house. The first thing i did was go to see if they WERE my ducks (I figured they were because I was the only one with ducks in the neighborhood). They were, all but one of my pekins, who had gone broody that exact day. She hatched 8/9 ducklings and was a GREAT mother. Oh yeah, and a cayuga is a good breed to have. They do lay pretty frequently (5-7 eggs a week). Plus, you may get lucky enough to get a black egg layer! Most cayugas now, lay white eggs. But the only cayuga I've had laid black eggs. Like I said previously, cayugas usually will go broody. Their eggs are pretty big too :D

I only have one Pekin hen. Guess I lucked out! When I adopted a drake (mallard x), I finally quit collecting her egg daily. At 15 eggs, she went VERY broody. We are on day 5 (that I know of..)

I'm new to the duck part of the forum too :D Just got ducks about 4 weeks ago and so far what I have learned so far about them is that they are scared of you until you start picking them up OFTEN, they are VERY messy, and they are adorably cute, OH yes, they love water ;) I got mine from TSC and picked up four of them. They are five weeks old now and I think I got two boys and a girl :D Pretty good odds I guess I can't complain.
