Hmmmm....I just posted this somewhere else and I think you've given me an idea:

Another thing, I am hatching in egg cartons. One of the hatchlings seems to have his foot stuck in the egg shell. I guess he should be fine until he gets stronger and pulls it out, but my problem is that he is lying on another egg. Will the other bird die if he can't get out due to this chick being on top of him?

I'm on day 20 btw.***

So do you think if I took the tubing from the fish tank and stuck it in through the plug hole I might be able to push the shell so he could get his little leg out?

Also, should that plug hole be in or out? Is it OK to take it off?

I'm on day 9
I have 15 bantam polish and 12 blue/red laced wyandottes in the incubator

I candled today and they are all developing.

Monday I had a power outage and the temp dropped in my incubator I had to get a converter and plug it in my van

AS well my new chicks inside were freezing and I had to start a fire to keep them warm and now i'm cleaning pasty butts because of the temp drops

Now I have to wait another 9 days before i'm going to candle again, I've promised myself to stay out of the incubator. Its been just under two years since I hatched chicks in the bator and my last batch was only 50% and none of them were very nice chicks mind you they were shipped eggs but I'm hoping for better results this time.

One of my Marans/Fav eggs has pipped too so I'm up to 4. The Cochin is still alive and cheeping every little while. I see blood in the tiny veins in the membrane so it evidently still has a ways to go before it's ready to get out of the shell.

I have an artist paint brush with a 16" handle that I put into the vent hole of my incubator. By careful maneuvering I can use the soft bristle ends to move the eggs just a little bit. I even had to wet the tip of the bristles to dampen the membrane of a slow hatching chick as he struggled to zip the shell open. It worked well and I didn't have to open the incubator.

We started with 38 going into lockdown with some I'm pretty sure will not make it all though I have two pips so far from the batch I though would not make it.

This is what we have so far out of the 38:
4 piped and 5 hatched and drying out.

Now once they pip, how long till they are supposed to hatch. I have two that pipped a long time ago and other birds have hatched while there is nothing coming from them.

And I also have this:

He's been this way for a little over an hour. Every once in a while he'll kick his leg up. He fell into another egg backwards (his head is out and to the side so he can breathe) and doesn't seem able to get up. Is he just resting?

Sometimes they rest for a long time before they get up and moving much so be patient - hatching is hard work. I know that it can take as long as 24 hours to go from pip to hatch so be prepared to see a whole lot of nothing going on for a while!

Awww....the joy of bird watching. lol I'm actually enjoying it as long as you guys keep comforting me that everything is going normal in there. I am now debating if I should wake up my 5 yr old. He was up until really late last night just waiting after that first pip, but the little guy didn't hatch out until after my 5yr (who couldn't fight his sleep any longer) passed out. My older ones think he will be so mad at me if I don't wake him, but I figure we still have so many more eggs to hatch, I'll just let him sleep a little longer.

How about you....any changes since 6:00 am? You had 4 right?

I have 5 pips now: 2 EEs, 1 Marans & 2 Cochins. The first Cochin is still moving around and cheeping occasionally but has made no more progress. One of the EE pips has gotten a bit bigger but everyone else is taking a nap I guess. I've got to head to work for a couple of hours so hopefully when I get done somebody will have come out to say hello.

It is now officially day 21. I have 17 chicks and 9 more pips! This hatch is going so much better.
