May hatch-a-long

My 6 Jubilee Orpingtons are starting the hatching journey! ALL 6 made it to lockdown...it would be amazing to get a 100% hatch, especially since losing all my Wyandottes last time. I use my Janoel-10 as a hatching brooder. Here we go! They started rockin' and rollin' this morning! :yesss:

I got to take field trips... to plant trees for the major timber companies in logged-off areas. Didn't even get paid for it! That was the extent of my farm experience.
Lol In west Texas I only remember one field trip. It was to a cattle ranch. I remember I kept a piece of a cow's ear after they had docked it to tag them.
When we moved to Louisiana I don't remember there being any farmy or natural field trips but I was raised farmy. So, we always had a garden and always had farm animals. I was raised homesteading before I'd ever heard the word lol.

First PIP! Hooray! Noticed late this afternoon! :wee
They aren't technically due till tomorrow, but none should be born before midnight...even though it's an estimate anyway! SOOOOOO excited! This little one pipped the wrong end and I did break lockdown with hands under a hot moist cloth as another member suggested in order to make sure s/he could breathe. The one time I didn't check a wrong-end pipper, the membrane was too thick down there and the poor baby couldn't puncture it and drowned. I didn't think they could pip the shell but not pierce the membrane at the same time. This time, I had to make sure. I never, ever, want to see a perfectly healthy chick die for no reason. Who knows why they get malpositioned? I can't help but wonder if it's from shipping somehow, but who knows. Fortunately, this baby had broken through and I was able to visualize enough of their beak and hear a peep to make sure they are getting air! SO HAPPY!!!!!

How are you enjoying the premier 1 plate? I'm using mine for the first time. I have to keep checking to see if they're alive, because they're so quiet under there!
I have that plate and they love it! QUIET CHICKS ARE HAPPY CHICKS! It seems off to people who used heating lamps forever, but these are sooooooooooo much better! More energy-efficient, chicks get to develop a normal circadian rhythm (natural day/night cycle instead of 24/7 lamp light, it's more like the heat and overhead security that mama hen provides, and this results in HAPPIER, HEALTHIER BABIES! :love Of course the Mama Hen Heating Pad is good too but I love my brooder plate because it's easily disinfected.

Enjoy your incubation! I don't know how you managed so many years in between! I don't want to stop incubating and admittedly felt a twinge of jealousy. I have 6 in the brooder that hatched a few days ago. I am wanting to fire it back up! I have a broody sitting on 3 eggs as well. It's all I would give her since she is a first time broody! They are due in 10 days. And I ordered shipping eggs this week. They will ship in 2-3 weeks!!!
Girl you are like me! LOL! We are hooked hatchiepeeps! :jumpy

Oh, and tomorrow I am setting more BLRW's! Silkie eggies should be here soon, too! And I have had 3 bators going, with more Coronation Sussex and Jubilees! You know you're addicted when you can't stop buying bators either (and yes I love the JANOEL-12 TOO! I have one, just sold another one). I am loving my Brinsea Octagon Advances, too.
