May hatch-a-long

Pics
So I'm not sure how to explain this. Pip #6 is now hatch #5 and should be either a cinnamon queen mix or bard mix with the lavender. I didn't expect to see any white or yellow chicks. So im a little baffled right now.

How can you tell if they are fertile or not?

They'd need to be cracked (checking for a blastoderm) or candled (checking for embryo). Those are the only ways I know.

Could be they started fertile but are not developing for a variety of reasons. Eggs ideally are handled with care. Not too hot, too cold, shaken, prwashed. All of those factors plus more affect viability. Are these shipped eggs?

It's the cinnamon queen. Because they're a hybrid their chicks look like this When I breed my Gold Sexlinks the chicks were usually white or yellow. F1 gold/red Sexlink roosters are mostly white with brown shoulders.

Im going to have to look into it a lot more. Becuase the lavender orpington doesn't show yellow, they are lavender at hatch. So even aside from the lav x red = black i didn't expect anything lighter then a lavender or light lavender. The rooster is a heritage so only thing i can think is asking the breeder if she has any white orpington that he might have been crossed with? I don't even know if there is such a thing?

Ok here's what I found on a quick search. I'm guessing it's different red genes...

So some things say red turns black (lavender on buff or lavender on red)
Others say red turns straw (I'm thinking this is a less dominate red gene like the softer reds of the cinnamon queen possibly)

So yes i agree cinnamon queen. It will be interesting to see what it looks like probably lavender and straw

So mad at myself. One of the chicks in the bator got stuck on its back. I left it for a while to let it figure things out but it just wasn't getting the hang of it. So I finally decided to help it a little and the damn lid slipped and smashed the other sebright egg. Grrr. So i checked the egg it was beatup pretty bad and had whites and blood oozing, but it didn't look like the chick was breathing of moving at all (thinking it might have already been dead in the shell) so i left it in for a while and just kept watching it but there was change. I finally decided to remove the egg, and do an eggtopsy. The chick looked much smaller then the hatched sebright, not a lot but enough that i think it might have died just before or after lockdown. There was still a lot of whites in the egg to which again tells me it had infact stopped developing. But despite the fact that it may have already been dead I feel bad that I literally took its last chance away if it had any chance left... off to check some fresh laid sebright eggs to see if
Oh no! That's terrible. I agree it was already DIS based on your description. But still heartbreaking. so sorry to hear that

A couple of hatches ago I dropped some eggs about 18" onto other eggs in the incubator. I think they were just under a week and all developing perfectly. About half (8+eggs) we're damaged. Some cracked beyond repair and 2 I used wax on (one hatched). But many had dislodged their air cells. I put them upright in a carton, no turning for 2 days, like shipped eggs. Most hatched, some didn't, but I felt terrible and stupid about ive done jeopardizing or eliminating
their best chance of hatching. Just know your not alone. Many have had these slip ups along the way.

there are still any fertile.
sorry to hear that ive done the same thing on my first time hatching i had an egg on day seven and i went to turn them and the this egg i was super excited about i dropped it i did not know i could do anything to help it and it was fertile i felt so bad uthobbyfarmer is right you are not alone there

you can see veins and you can see the chick moving some times you might need to get a brighter light. to candle all you do is take the light put your hands over the top and make your hand to where the egg and sit on it ontop of the light you should be seeing veins by day seven but you may want to wait tell day 10 or 14
