May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Final Count for my May 17th Hatch:

There are 5 Brahma (hen) x Dominique (roo) cross - love the feathered legs:

And here are my 6 Dominiques (they wouldn't sit still):

Then I have 2 Blue Splash Ameraucana:

Two Dominique x Ameraucana crosses:

And one Buff Orpington x Dominique cross. (It wouldn't stop chasing it's toes - LOL!)

Thats a final count of 16 healthy chicks out of 26 eggs.

Unfortunately the one little one that had yoke issues had to be culled. I separated it - gave it food and water - it was totally uninterested in the food and for some reason could not seem to drink the water - it would raise its beak struggle for a bit and then lower its head back down - and the water would run out of its beak. It got rather weak over the past four hours and could barely walk two steps without falling over on its side - then it couldn't get back up without help. I felt that I had done all I could to help it survive and did not want it to suffer. Thanks for all of your input on it's condition - it was probably something bacterial.

As for my sanity - well - I'm thankful for 16 healthy chicks - and will be doing it all over again on May 30th. Maybe all sanity is lost!! LOL

But I did take the opportunity to candle the 13 eggs that are set to hatch on the 30th - today is day 10 - all show good veining and growth and I could even see slight movement in the lighter colored ones!

Well I decided to remove the other eggs. I know I know, call it instinct, sometimes I hate being right. So here is my results from this hatch.
15 shipped 13 fertile 10 went into lock down. I have one quitter and 7 internal pips and died. They all pipped into the side of the egg, very low. I assume this happened last night. I never heard and peeping till this morning. And these 2 are not out of the woods yet. You can still see a lot of blood vessels around the membrane. But they are breathing and I am keeping the membrane moist. You can see a small amount of bleeding where they broke through the membrane. Right now they must be resting and absorbing the rest of the blood. I sure hope they make it. I would guess as long as they are warm and breathing they are ok. They dont seem to be making the moves to hatch. So I guess this is like a LARGE pip hole!

See their little beeks? The shell is almost completely gone on the other side where the huge aircell went down the egg. Top egg has a little corn starch where I put pressure and stopped the bleeding. They are loud, but just not quite ready....lol

- they don't look too bad - I've seen a lot worse. At least you got 6 others coming up that are seemingly healthy. Can't wait to see those pics!!

Hi again all!!  I finally quit trying to construct my own incubator between work and farm tasks and went out and bought one at Murdoch's here in Colorado. Calibrated on Wednesday and set the 9 Barred Rock / sexlink crosses on Thursday. Now on day three anticipating a hatch on 6/6. These will hopefully be replacements for the two great layers some critter in the neighborhood ate back at the end of April.

Incubator seems to be holding the temp fine but having a little trouble getting the humisity where it should be. It's staying between 50-60%. Is that too much for right now?
. Hey polak I was wondering what happened to ya ,, as far as the humidity for my liking it's way high I do dry hatches and have almost double the hatch rate that's no water first 18 days now that is dependent on the air cell size when I candle I adjust as needed but for me at over 5000 asl it works well I add water on day 18 to hatch to about 65 % it is about right to wet mushy chick to dry shrink wrapped chick so 65 I find is perfect but some others may chime in with a lil more info alot depends on the bator too fan no fan ? It changes the numbers quite a bit

Did to incubate with eggs vertical or horizontally? I had similar issues last hatch, wondering what went wrong over here. :/
