May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

So I set 45 eggs in the bator last night and have been turning them by hand. I'd ordered a turner and it arrived today - holds 42. Three eggs have to go. When I set them, I weighed and candled them. Some of these eggs are VERY porous, some of them order than others (the breeder dated them), and some are fairly dirty. I've read not to clean dirty eggs for various reasons. I've also read that porous eggs often don't hatch nor do eggs older than ten days. I have a couple that were right at 10 days when I set them and a couple that have older dates and are pretty dirty. So...

In your opinion, which eggs do I cull?

I am slowly trying to catch up here, pretty far behind since we are finally getting some warm weather I have been outside doing the yard work instead of inside watching my eggs. Ha!

As far as porous and dirty eggs, I have 1 bird in my flock that lays a porous egg. I have not been able to get hers to go past day 5. I also recently ordered 2 dozen hatching eggs. The first dozen came very dirty. I am doing an expiriment with them. I washed a good portion of them in different substances to see what would happen. I had 13 go in. Pulled out 2 clears and the rest seem to be doing alright. I can post more details if you like. (1 clear was an unwashed eggs and one was washed.). My 2nd dozen are also porous eggs. They are only a couple days along so I am not ready to candle those yet. Keep you updated.

WOW! time is flying, I have been so busy, Tomorrow is 20 days. Only two more days, I keep peeping at the eggs everytime I go by them. I keep hoping for an early peep. I know better. I do not open the incubator. I look through the glass top. I know better. After all this time, I am still impatient and unsure right up to the last minute. Until that little chick gets itself out I don't feel a bit releived. Hurry up little ones, mommy hen wants to say hello. Sigh! No Momma hen is more impatient. I have chicks running out of my dinning room now. but here I am wanting these to hurry. I am a crazyhen Mom for sure.

I stop turning all my eggs on Day 16 and it seemed to really help my hatch rate. I had several in the wrong positions in previous hatches and this last hatch was a TON better.

I'm in, I have 3 birchen modern game in bator and 4 Russian spangled orloffs. I also have 2 modern game and 2 orloff eggs under a broodie little bantam. they are due May 10th and May 11th. I'm so excited I cant stand it:)

I stopped turning on day 17 this time. More out of convenience this time. It would be great if it really helped though. I will watch to see.

I would like to join too! I received 7 hatching eggs (Marans, Welsumer and Ameraucana) April 16th, unfortunately, the postal service left them in our outdoor community mail box it was 23 F, they were in the post box for a good eight hours. I didn't hold out much hope due to the freezing temps, but turned out 1 Ameracauna and 1 Marans started to develop for sure. Sadly my hygrometer/thermometer fell on the Ameracauna egg and cracked and dented the shell, I used melted wax on the the cracks but it looks like all the veining is gone, looks like a blood ring now. But I will leave it in the incubator just in case. One Marans baby is moving around in the egg, the rest look like quitters or non-fertile eggs. I set them on April 17th, so we shall see what happens around May 7th. I will order more hopefully on May 8 or 9 and try again! Good Luck to everybody!!!

Just set 30 more home mixed into the bator...this is the second incubator, the first is in lockdown and will be used for lockdowns as this one doesn't have the mesh "floor".
This batch will be interesting to watch as I had to clean several of the eggs and some are almost 3 weeks old. I had to order a new bottom for the incubator and it took longer then expected for delivery.
