May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Well I went to the feed store and came home with some new chicks.... only 2, a black silkie and coincidentally a polish with gold and black down. They said it was a type 2 dan-something, anyone know what that is? lol
Quail still cooking....steady heat, no humidity problems, things are good!

Congrats jnjmanning!
I soooo wish I could go to the feed store and buy chicks

Needing advice...

What I THOUGHT was 6-7 eggs under my broody bantam OEGB, actually turned into 10-11.  She seems to be having a difficult time keeping them all under her, and seems flustered while trying to turn them all and get them all back underneath her.  Should I move some to the Brinsea I've already got going to make it a little easier on her??

I've got Lav/Split Ameraucana eggs in the bator now, started on Monday - the broody started setting last Wed night/early Thurs morning, so her clutch is about 4 days ahead of the eggs already in the bator, time-wise.  That would give me maybe a day or two between hatching/drying/moving the bantam hatchlings before putting the Ameraucanas on lockdown after their final candling.

Thoughts??

I think since her eggs are ahead of yours that you could incubate them without a problem, and then about the hatch time take them back to her for hatching? Its possible that between now and then there will be some culls too, so she might have extra space close to hatch time. I'd do it for now and depending on those factors you should be able to slip them back to her either as eggs or as new babies. :)

Here they are! The little partridge silkie in the left corner got scalped by his momma, so he's got blu-kote and vitamin D ointment on his head. But the other seven are doing great!

My second of 5 small staggered hatches started today at 1:30am! I woke up & checked on the eggs even though the 1 only had a crack in it when I went to bed. It was just fixing to hatch so I got to see it. Another is fixing to hatch now & 2 more pips. This hatch is from my own light sussex so I am hoping for a good hatch. Its amazing the light sussex chick is still bigger than the 1 1/2 wk old oegb chicks in the brooder.

I know the guineas will do their part El at least.
As for the feed/farm store purchases I am GLAD its a ways for me. I'd be in line for divorce if I had close access to more chicks to purchase. So I hatch everything I can LOL.

Not sure if this should go in May or June hatch thread. Found my last Guinea hen, on her nest up under a brush pile

. Haven't seen her since the 13th and can't remmeber if she was around before then. Hopefully she will come back down to the house in the next couple days so I can check out the nest.
She really defencesive, won't let other guineas by her when she eating. Or my big BA roo. Only the drake had luck chasing her off her feeeding mission. Took forever for her to go back to nest, think she paranoid that somebody is following her, LOL.

Hi Guys
Well we are sitting on day 20 right now. No sign of anything though I did think I heard a chirping but now think it may have been the clock next to the bator????
Wishful thinking!
The only thing is I cannot get the humidity up any more than 50 - even though I have damp sponges in and all the water troughs are full! Even when I put water into the sponges down a straw it doesn;t move the humidity beyond 55 and then the temp drops!

I am still hopefull something may be in there? Whether it is a chick or not remains to be seen!

Oes

[/quote use a plant sprayer with warm water to mist the walls of the bator oes be quick about it repeat as needed another trick I use here during the dry months is to add a lil table salt to the water when I fill the wells salt water evaporates at a much faster rate and when in a closed environment adds humidity good luck this go round keep the faith
