Maybe cocci, but no blood???

I had eight 14 week old RIR runts - they just weren't growing, weren't feathering out completely, just kind of weird. I had seen it happen with individual chickens, but not whole groups. I went out yesterday and found 4 of them dead, we assumed it was a snake b/c one appeared to have been swallowed up to it's wings, then spit out. I did a quick clean out and retro fit of my other coop to pen up the last 4 under the nesting boxes so they would be a bit safer (concrete floored building vs. hoop coop on bare ground). I went out this morning to check on them and one was extremely lethargic, wouldn't really wake up. I let them out into the run hoping that might perk them up a bit, but no luck. Came home from church and only 3 were left and were starting to stumble around. I have some medicated feed for my Guinea Keets that I put out there b/c I don't know what else to do at this point. I did find one site that in brief said that it can happen sometimes when older chicks aren't exposed to soil soon enough b/c it's naturally occurring. I wasn't able to get them outside until a couple weeks ago b/c I didn't have a coop available, but even then at 12 weeks they were small. I just don't know what the deal is and am afraid I am going to lose my other three. And then if I do, will my older (3 years old) hens get infected with whatever it is? Do I need to even bother with more chicks this year?? I was planning on some Aracaunas (sp?) the end of the month but won't bother if they are just going to die, too. What do I do at this point? What is going on with them? I inspected the poop from the coop they were in up until yesterday afternoon and it looked normal to me... not runny, no blood, etc. But all the other symptoms line up with cocci.

Get Corid as fast as you can and treat them for coccidia. Bloody poop is one symptom of many. Most times, once you see bloody poop, it is too late.

I tried to get some today, but the Tractor Supply is out until Tuesday. The last 3 have perked up a little bit, and I put some sugar water in the coop for the night since I read that can sometime buy some time.... I'm just at a loss at this point. Not sure what to do it I can't get the meds for them...

Do they by any chance have Sulmet? It's certainly not my drug of choice for chickens but it's better then nothing, if your birds do have coccidiosis they may not make it until Tues.

Now it's looking like it might be Mareks :( I haven't done too much research on it yet, but a friend asked what color their eyes were and the three remaining have a blue/green tint around their pupils. I'm guessing that's my answer. Now to find out if that means guaranteed daeth for my remaining three (stunted growth, irregular feather growth - one is still totally lacking a tail at 14/15 weeks old)... then also what to do for any future flocks or if my 4 oldies are at risk at all.

Hi MoonAngel12,

I wouldn't be thinking of Marek's right now. That's highly unlikely given what you've described. The blue-green tint around the iris is normal. With Marek's, if it's affecting the eye then the iris itself turns grey and the pupil is misshapen and abnormal. My suggestion is go back to cocci, and treat.

There are other causes of runting and stunting if it's not cocci. What are you feeding them?

Cheers
Erica

They are on basic starter/grower from the Feed and Seed - the same stuff all my other chicks have been raised on. I did start giving them some medicated feed yesterday when I found that I couldn't get any Corid. I'll head to town tomorrow in hopes that the shipment of it came in...

The pupils, from what I could tell, all looked uniform.

I have lost 30+ birds to Marek's and to date, have never seen one have its eyes affected. It is extremely rare for eyes to show Marek's especially on more than one bird. Treat for coccidia. Try and get Corid asap...the medicated feed does not contain enough medication to treat Coccidiosis, it is merely to hep prevent infection.

Finally got some meds today. The shipment didn't come in to TS - and going by the looks of their system it's a supplier issue b/c all the ones that came up in their search were either out or very low in stock. I found some powdered Corid and Sulmet at Southern States (for some reason I thought my SIL said she checked there, but they didn't have any??). I got the Sulmet just in case it for some reason wasn't Cocci since it covered a couple other things as well. I figure spending the $8 now was cheaper then the gas it would take me to get back to town to get it if I ended up needing it this week. They told me I could mix the two for good measure, but I'm hesitant to try that advice. I did lose another chick sometime over night so I am down to two.

I started another thread that hasn't had any replies yet - but I'm clueless how to proceed forward with any future flocks. I really want to get some more chicks so I can get them raised up before cool weather hits (and our newest addition to the family in Dec!). I know I won't be up for it next year with 4 kids 5 and under :p. I have 3 guineas I would like to put in the hoop coop that they were in. Pretty much wire, minimal amount of wood for the bottom frame, and bare ground with some weeds left. I know I need to douse everything with bleach water - what else? The keets are on medicated feed now. Is that enough or what can I do to ensure their health the best I can?
