15 week old golden comets. I put some golf balls in the laying boxes today. 1 in each of 4 boxes.
Just went out to do some work on the coop and 1 hen is in the box,,,,,, talking happily.

Should I leave the golf balls in there?? I dont she is mature enough to be laying a egg but I could be wrong. Seems she is trying to hatch it or something,,lol.
BTW the golf balls were only in there for a short time,,didnt take long for her to notice it. Not sure about the other eight hens,,if they have even seen them. B4 this they never been in the boxes at all..

what do you think?? Is she gona lay the first egg????? Should I remove the golf balls tonight at dusk???

Im going to go check on her again right now.

I read your first post and was going to say leave the golf balls in since sex-links often lay well before other breeds, then I read your second post......Congrats on the first egg!

Im still amazed that she laid a egg today. My girlfriend is going to be upset,,,

,,,she wanted to be here for the first egg. (Sorry Tammy,,,it wasnt my fault,,,lol.)

Should I break it open and look at it? It does not float in water,,is that a good thing??

One other thing that crosses my mind. What are the odds that I put golf balls in the boxes the same day a hen was ready to lay an egg????? I just went and looked everywhere in the coop to make sure no other eggs have been laid and I just didnt see them. Found nothing.

yay congrats!

and good move with the golf balls! I would leave them there until they all start to lay.

yes, it's a good thing that it doesn't float- means it's nice and fresh!

Crack that baby open over a frying Pan, and eat the evidence!

Or maybe in the spirit of long term relationship with the gf, cook it for her?

I tried taking the golf balls out once my older girls started laying regular they stopped using the nest boxes so I leave the golf balls in the nest boxes the girls seem to like them in there. congratulations on the first egg.

Wanted to add you could put a small hole in the top (use a nail) and a larger hole in the bottom and blow the egg out into a bowl rinse the egg shell out and let dry and keep the first egg. I did this with my new babies. Now I am going to use them in a craft project.
