My 11 week old black australorp pullet has a strange growth on her left foot, right by the nail of the left toenail. She isn't bothered by it. It's the same lovely black as her whole leg and foot, and isnt very large. It just showed up a few days ago, and is pretty hard, like its calcified We just picked up all the chickens and did a 20 point inspection and aside from funky toe, everything on everybody is glossy, feathered, and quite pleased. What could this be and should i be freaking out?

Hmm, that's interesting. It came in just a couple days?

Could it be scally leg? That's all I can think of

I noticed her toe was swollen thursday night, the following morning i saw it was a bump. It isnt getting worse or better- ill google scaly leg!

Nope that's not scally leg. I really don't know. Wish I could help.

I'd just keep watching it and make sure nothing changes.

Seams like some one on here must know. I've found an answer here for almost everything chicken.

Maybe bumble foot?
I did google toe bump on chickens and found this info. You will have to decide for your self if that's what it is or not. It doesn't look like it to me but I thought I'd provide you the link so you can look for your self.

I thought bumblefoot at first, but she has no scab or swelling anywhere (she thinks im nuts for wiggling all her toes so often). Im going to keep inspecting daily for changes.

Well, she began pecking it so we opted for removal. It was hollow with whitish pollops in it, about the size of a pencil lead tip. The toe itself had a few which wiped clear. We glopped antibiotic ointment pretty thick and wrapped it,but she kept pulling it back off. I even used althletic tape and she just pecked at it constantly. Now shes scratching and foraging with her pals and telling them stories of the "inside". Im going to clean and medicate her again in the morning, and keep it glooped until it heals.

Oh! That's interesting. You didn't get any picture of the stuff in the bump did you? O.O Sounds weird, I wonder what it was.

Yep keep it clean best you can. The end of the toe is a hard place to wrap. You have to wrap the toe and up around the 'ankle' and back around the toe making sure to cover the end of the toe well. I used that woven athletic tape. I had a hen peck the tips of her toes off and she wouldn't quit picking even after the bandage so we had to keep her toes wrapped for months.
We never did know what was wrong with her. My guess is shes a tad schizophrenic. LOL Shes always running around the yard clucking and squawking about 'dangerous predators' while all the other chickens look at her like shes crazy. Its hysterical! She just runs all over the yard screeching like a coon has her by the tail while all the other chickens scratch in the lawn like usual. She does this at least once a day. She crows like a rooster too which is funny!
She will also relentlessly try to hatch my plastic egg. As soon as I put it in there she goes broody. Strange strange chicken she is! I got her from my neighbor 4 years ago as a year old chicken.

My camera wouldnt focus on it, it was about the size of a pencil eraser. She is a funny bird, she goose honks. When wr got done and put her back in the pen she cackled like, "Wait! Im a house bird now!" My husband says i spend WAY too much time with the chickens. They get let out and run a race every morning.
