Maynard, Mass Bylaws anyone?

When you got the animals did you ask the town permission before having them? Or have to check with anyone first?

We just got them and reported the number of birds when they sent out the annual census. They want to see who the human residents are, but also ask about poultry, horses, goats, cows and dogs.

We were able to build an 8 by 16 coop without a permit too.

Town law allows residents to build structures of a certain size or smaller (I forget what the limit is but we're below it) without a building permit, provided it's for poultry.

There's a LOT of livestock in town. Every week the police get at least one loose horse/cow/goat report. Someone not far from us had peacocks, one of which always managed to wander into the road.

So I take my previous statement about Sudbury's animal inspector.

Apparently my dad says she does come every year. Usually in the fall and just takes a quick walk around. He doesn't know how she knows what we have because he's never reported anything to the town. She just takes a quick walk around and thats it.

I also found out most "Animal Inspectors" are the towns Dog Officer.

So I have sqaured everything away with getting chickens, just didn't get it passed with my boyfriends parents...they said maybe in the spring. Well atleast I did part of the work already and I have my other ladies just not as close to home as I would like them

Maybe next year

Hello-
I am in Sudbury and recently checked with the town to make sure I wasn't building a coop in vain. She said she'd come by once a year and inspect in the fall. No rules other than don't upset the neighbors. It seemed very laid back to me. I'm in the process now of coop planning/purchasing/building to be ready for next summer.

The woman that comes to our house is very nice and very laid back. As long as everthing looks safey she really says nothing and half the time you don't even know she has stopped by. She will leave a pink slip saying she inspected everything. I don't think you will have an issue

Snowhorse- You seem to have a good handle on the local rules. Rumor has it that if I add another type of farm animal to my family we get a big reduction in our property taxes. (We only have chickens at the moment. ) I'm thinking this might be a good way to convince my spouse to get the Nigerian Dwarf Goats I've been yearning for. ;)Do you know anything about this rumor??

Thanks!

I do know you have to have a certain amount of property to have goats. And I will look as to what it is, they are classified under livestock and you can't have them under a certain amount of acerage I think.

I'll get back to you on that.
