Mcmurray chick order...should I cancel?

I picked up my chicks from them on the 22nd. I have no problems getting chicks from them. If for some reason they do start getting sick I will put the sick ones down and call them for a refund or more chicks. It is something that happens but with where they are it is the best deal for me... They are replacing or refunding the purchase price for all chicks that are sick and dying.. I am not going to pay a ton extra for shipping and have those chicks stressed and dying too... I came home with 33 chicks. I only ordered 30 and the gave me an extra pullet for my rainbow pullet pack and an extra blue andalusian roo. And of course you also get the extra rare chick..I still am not sure what it is other then it is a feather footed. I received at least 8 different breeds of pullets and couldnt be happier. I am watching them close to see if they start looking sick but of course that wont be for another week or so. I am not going to let mass hysteria stop me from buying. I have faith that they will make it right if things go wrong and I dont need them to say that it was thier fault to make me feel better. Jenn

That's not exactly true. I know for a fact they have my results and have spoken in depth with their vets in Iowa and have been working with MN. Seeing as my chicks are part of a hatchery born illness, they are now determining what to do according to the owner. What they don't have is a statement to release.

IMHO, I would wait for at least several weeks to receive shipments of the birds that have been proven infected, meaning Cuckoo Marans, EEs, Blue Cochins, Partridge Cochins and Buff Rocks along with some other polish (not sure which colors).

No body really knows whats going on and it could have been a bad vaccine that all hatcheries could have been exposed to. MM has been in business for years. I would give them they benefit of the doubt, but everyone will have to do what they have to do. I think its more than just the problems with our ag system than anything else. But what do I know...

I would look at this in the same way I would if a toy manufacturer started getting complaints about lead in their toys. No matter how great my dealings were with the toy manufacturer in the past, I would not order new toys from them for however long a time it takes for the problem to be dealt with. In the mean time, I would order from toy manufacturers who aren't having noticeable problems at the time, even though it is possible that the new toy manufacturer could have a similar problem. I'd be hoping it doesn't, and banking on the fact that it is safer to order from someone who is not getting numerous complaints at the time.
I'm sure MM is a fine hatchery, but IMO it is best not to invite trouble in when you hear it knocking. I have no doubt MM will eventually fix the problem, and I would either order with someone else in the meantime or wait until they have dealt with their situation.

The problem is that there is little or no confirmation that MM IS having trouble. And the rumors are like a grassfire.

MM appear to be honoring and reinforcing their warranties, they have served the community extremely well for many decades, and if they say that their poultry is good, and they will replace it if it isn't, then they deserve some respect for that.

ps ......

Lead is a sin of commission .... were MM chicks turning up with strange and unhelpful chemicals or toxins in their systems, then the two would be comparable.

That is not the case.

Well, whether they confirm it or not, I know what I dealt with, and I am not quick to get a repeat performance anytime soon!!! Day olds are just too darn cute to have them dying en masse on me!! I do have 6 older chickens who are fine, 3 ducks who are fine, and one goose who is actually in the same pen with the 3 roos I have left and she is fine as well!! I will just let time heal my wounds, and one day I will try it again!!

It's comparable in that there are an inordinate amount of complaints about the same thing. Regardless of whether the company is actually to blame, they will not receive my business until the fear is proven groundless or a problem has been confirmed and fixed. Since AE has been confirmed by a few, I would play it safe and assume the fear is not groundless.
Good luck to everyone and their new chicks, regardless of the source! I

the little cuties, and hope they all grow into healthy spoiled brats

I don't buy it that MM does not have an actual diagnosis yet. You can't tell me that if people who own small flocks, like the ones on this board, can get a diagnosis in a week that a big outfit like MM takes this long to pin point a problem. I don't believe it, they just, understandably, don't want to lose any more business than neccesary. Personally I wouldn't order from them this year.

A neighbor and I ordered 105 chicks from Cackle and we have 108 alive and healthy. They are almost ready to be moved outside.
