I ordered 27 chicks from McMurray last February, 5 varieties of large fowl Wyandottes. I received 29 plus my free mystery chick. I lost 1 chick in transit and 1 later to pasty butt that I missed. McMurray refunded for both with no questions asked.
I did have an issue where 4 of the chickens turned out blind but not sure if that was a hatchery problem or a trauma problem, I didn't notice it until I got them into the coop and they are still alive and healthy. They just hang out in the coop, they know where the food and water are and they are very good about following the other chickens if they do decide to go out of the coop. I haven't taken the time to talk to McMurray about them, I'm happy with them so other than wanting to notify them, I'm not interested in complaining. I'm especially attached to my blind roo "Moon," great thing about having a blind sweet roo is that he never crows and is not at all interested in running away or attacking. I can sit him in my lap as long as I would like and he talks to me in quiet murmurs.
The others were all healthy, all of the pullets ordered were pullets, 5 out of 6 of the silver penciled straight run were pullets, 3 out of 6 SR BLRWs were pullets as well. Their personalities are great, one of the GL hens is pushy with the other chickens, but that's typical to have one that wants to be top of the pecking order and makes sure she stays there.
As for quality, I'm pretty happy for hatchery birds! I have a friend that had told me her cousin in NY gets all of his show Wyandottes from McMurray and I was skeptical, but with the way mine turned out they really can be quite nice.
My free rare chick was a SSH roo.
