Mealworm Breeding Project

I recently began a project to breed meal worms as a food/treat/enrichment source for my birds.

Supplies
-3 tier pull out drawer
-meal worms (250, amazon)
-oats for bedding
-carrots/other veggies for food/water
-fine mesh for each layer (separate eggs)

Firstly, I cut out the bottom of 1 of the 3 drawers, and then hot glued the mesh in there. The worms and beetles can't fall through, but eggs can. I filled the top most layer with oats and added carrots, then poured in my worms. I'm going to let these worms all morph into beetles, and switch the other 2 trays that they lay in. I'm new to this, but hopefully it works out.

Watching this as I just started my own last week. One thing I've found is the potatoes most recommend to put in with the meal worms dry up quick.....Im using carrots right now but how do you know they are getting enough hydration?

I want to do this! I have lizards as well so it would work out well!

I find that apples work best for me. Never had them mold, and the worms keep eating them all the way down even after they have "dried" out. Leave the skin on and just slice the apples into roughly quarters.

Haha! I'll have to take some! Not a huge fan of them myself, but it will hopefully be worth it in the end. I considered doing crickets or roaches, but too gross.
