Mealworm farming

It is amazing that for a long time nothing seems to change in the bin. Then BOOM the explosion happens. I'm in a lull period now. Tons of beetles in both bins and very few worms. Haven't found wee wormies but I haven't looked very hard. We were gone for a week and left the bins to their own devices. They are no worse for wear now. I love these low maintenance projects!!!

Congrats and welcome to all new worm farmers. The fun has just begun!!

I'm glad I got into the wormfarming project. It's turning out to be much more interesting than I thought it would be. I'm excited about the opportunity of giving my girls huge handfuls of worms each and every day. Hopefully, by the time Sept. rolls around, I'll have oodles of wormies and beetles and pupa.

Haha and my first reaction when I read you got a beetle was, "What, no pictures???"

Grats! And waiting on the pic!

moved my wormies outside. Beetle population exploded, which I guess is a good thing. However, I think it might have been a mistake. I took them out of their plastic drawers and put them in an old fish tank. First, there were ants. I think I may have gotten that under control. Then flies. Working on that now. But the other problem is the food. I give them apples, potatoes and lettuce (which they are also in a cornmeal and rolled oats mixture). When they were in the house (which I keep very cool) the food would just dry up as they ate it. Now, it gets all clumpy and gross. What do I do? Do I need to move them back inside? Our temps are VERY hot right now. I think it's supposed to get up to 110 (w the heat index) today. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! That's one of the reasons I moved mine back inside. Once it started getting humid the veggies got nasty. You can put the veggies on a plastic lid or something to keep the substrate from getting gucky and then change it out daily. My house is kept at 72 degrees and the wormies are still thriving so I'm happy. They do develop quicker at higher temps but when humidity is an issue, like in PA, ugggggg.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Hanna, I think I will probably move them back inside this weekend. Maybe I'll put them by a window so they can get more heat. (I keep the house pretty chilly). 'Course I just read an article about this "drought" continuing another six months, so my wormies may just have to start paying rent
