Mealworm farming

Hannahkat, I agree. The worm farm is not a sterile enviroment but should be considered a clean one. There is a smell to every living organism but the worm farm has a slight(to me) inoffensive odor when my nose is in it. If you farm anything you have to be ready to get down and dirty sometimes!! Just cleaned off the poop board. Talk about odor!!

I don't get much of an odor from mine. They smell pretty earthy. And I, too, have to be right there in it.
I have 4 very large tubs in the den, I think if it smelled I would get more complaints. Of course, my house isn't the cleanest so the worm bins probably smell a whole lot better than my kitchen sink does.

I don;t mind the wormies when I see the joy on my little chickie faces! And the big chickie faces, too! One red sex link had one sampling several weeks ago but now will trip me up when I come down to the barn if she sees the container! If I offer up another treat she searches my fingers for the worms!

Owensmom ~ your nose must be like mine! AND there's not much worse than chicken poo

It's okay when it's sitting there, undesturbed, but smear it just a wee bit and ugggggg!

Amy ~ sounds like you need to smuggle a couple for that worm-starved Sex Link. My Gabby girl is like that too, but I've been feeding her extra since she's had such a hard few weeks, first being broody and then going into a severe molt. Worms in yogurt and oats is sooooo yummy!

You spoil your girls so much! They love you for it!

This lady would love to have lots of goodies and always gets the broken or cracked eggs when I find them. She knows to follow me around the tractors because she gets those treats but I know she loves the mealies. Unfortunately, the other 50+ girls knows she has me pegged so they often start coming to see what i am offering and then the 30+ ducks have to come see what the cackling about.

Oh, dear Lord, now you crazy people have me convinced I need to start raising worms!!! How am I ever gonna break this to my hubby??? lol

I've only been doing chickens since May, and have found that "chicken math" must be a natural phenomenon, since my "half a dozen chickens" is already up to 2 dozen chickens and 2 pair of Button Quail, and now the worms......

Must go shopping......

(after I go tell my chickies about this!)

I am happy to say that while sifting through the beetles and adding some carrots I peeked into the baby wormie/egg drawer I could see intsy wintsy, teeny tinsy wormies in there...

needless to say I am a little overexcited abount some insects I have living in plastic bins on the floor of my house that I will soon be scooping out to feed my numerous egg machines...call me weird lol

I was digging in my substrate this weekend and saw baby wormies!!! I was very excited to see that. Since I moved them outside I was afraid I'd lost most of them (even though there were tons of beetles). So I'm glad to know I'm doing something right.
