Mealworm farming

I can think of nowhere ( and I really did try hard..) else on the planet where one could be excited and exclaim " I have baby worms!" and everyone else would be excited for them, other than here.. On BYC

Yes it is a little comical. You know what I like?

I like to put my ear to the container and listen to the sound of them moving.

It is rather loud when there are alot of them. Reminds me of rice krispies and the snap, crackle, pop.

What microwave meal is that? I want to get one. Heck I might even eat the food in it first lol.

Gosh, I haven't paid attention real well. I get it at the local Dollar General and it is a packaged dry pasta with chicken (what else?) Alfredo mix. It seems it is a common name company that makes it. It is really good, imo. Probably could get it at about any grocery. Just look on the back at the directions and it will say it has a strainer lid. Seems it is the plastic bowl wrapped with a card board sleeve. (Clear as mud?)
I am not a cook and if DD doesn't whip up something or DH isn't home to cook then I have to make for myself and sandwiches get boring. Give me a power saw and drill and I am happy but the kitchen is like another country to me.

That reminds me, I went to the Pawn Shop the other day and bought a new cordless drill. A nice big fancy one with bells and whistles. DH says he can't believe I get so excited over power tools. But it makes my life easier on the farm! And right now so many people are out of jobs the Pawn Shops are over loaded with stuff like that so you can talk them down pretty cheap on most things.
And DH has no room to talk, he has a big bookshelf in the kitchen with HIS cookbooks.

Seeing your first pupae and then your first worms are so exciting!

I still get excited when I see the itsy mealies crawling around, knowing they will grow into big worms full of yummy nutrition for the birds.

And DH really wants to feed some of my meal worms to the Bluebirds this winter. ............Did I say I was getting down in numbers?

Not when we will be feeding the wild birds, too!

Congratz, what size are they?

They are small, but not just hatched so they have molted once or twice. I figured I had them for a week or two, just had not dug down in the substrate to check for sure.

LOL I get excited over power drills too! In fact, I'd rather have a really good cordless 18V drill than a nice mixer. In fact, my 18V cordless drill *is* my mixer now haha. Works so much better, is variable speed, and I can put any hand mixer thingie (I'm way too cheap to get a stand mixer - forks and spoons mix dang well and tons easier to wash) in there I want instead of just the two cheap things that come with them. Good tip on the pawn shops! I have seen stuff in those and thought "wow no way I'd pay that for a used, not under warantee, _________" Didn't realize you could talk them down. DOH.

LOL I never thought about using my drill instead of my mixer but then DH uses the mixer more than I do and I really don't want him touching my tools!

I do put a coat hanger bent in a triangle on my drill and mix my paints though. Anything to be able to play with the cordless stuff.

The Pawn shop had a lot of tools and we dug through until we found this one. It is 18V, has levels built in on the side and top with all kinds of other stuff I have yet to learn to use. It came with it's original case and the owners manual, there are 2 batteries and a flash light I doubt I will use plus some drill bits. It is like brand new and I got it for $40.

Okay, I know we got off the subject of wormies but this is a cool community so we have to share all kinds of stuff!
