Mealworm farming

atm mine are in a cold garage in the uk.

will this kill the, or just slow them down?

dont really have anywhere in the house that i could put them without the risk of the catsjumping on it and knocking it over.

I find this really odd. I can't imagine them eating enough to make the food disappear. I have given potato's, baby carrots, and apple, and I have seen some attach to it so I suppose they are eating it, but mostly it just dries out and I give them more every few days or a week or so.

I have cats in my house, too but try to secure them across chair arms with lids on them or we have the tall ones under the dining room table with lids on them. You see how tall the bins are with the chair behind it. They come almost up to the seat but slide under the table well.

People have given us several used plastic tubs so we clean them out well but also line with plastic trash bags. We are afraid there are some stuff we can't wash out that would harm them.

Ack! In these photos I can see we need to sweep, mop and change the tablecloth for winter. How do I get so behind in my housework?

I am thinking you give them more than they can eat. I put food in about once a week or more often as they consume it down. It depends on what I have in the containers as to how much I give them. Right now I believe I can give an entire apple to the Exotic Nutrition one and they would eat it in a matter of days.

This morning DH gave them a slice of pumpkin. In a matter of hours they have hollowed it out more in the middle and are still working on it. I just took this photo a minute ago. By tonight it will be only skin.

There are other bins that have a lot less mealies and beetles in them so we only give them a cube of pumpkin or a half of a baby carrot. Yesterday it was fresh banana peels which they took out in short order.

My readings right now in the house are 66 degrees and 61% humidity. Though I think my humidity reader is high. I am thinking it is really only around 45% but would have to take a reading on the other digital reader and right now it is in my hatcher. more chicks to feed, ya know!

No problem. If it helps, Gallo is Spanish for rooster. It is pronounced: Guy-o, which also might help.

Yep, they'll be fine. As long as they don't freeze, they'll be fine. But WestKnollAmy has a good suggestion too!

That's neat. Mine are not nearly that active.

cheers for the suggestions, i will have to try and find a place to put them inside i think.

or use this as en excuse to start another lot to compare the differences.

i am not sure its freezing in the garage yet but it may well get to that point later in the year.

In my post regarding the lettuce disappearing overnight, this is with Superworms, not Mealworms. It's truly amazing how much 600 Superworms can eat in a day! Mealies - yeah, i'm good for a couple of days with these guys.
