Mealworm farming

What do you need help with my dear? The farms all sound like they're doing fine to me! A few observations:

*Gallo del Cielo is a 'he' 'him'

*Can't say that the size of my second and third generations are smaller than the first....look the same to me! I'll be able to verify second to third since a good portion of my second generation is in the freezer! btw...freezing them for winter was one of the smartest things I've done this year! yea for me!!

*Wormie mortality seems to fluctuate and I haven't been able to figure it out except to accept that they are bugs and no matter how many die, they will still rule the world.

*Smaller and less is better than bigger and more (referencing size of container and amount of veggies/fruit given..try not feeding them a day here and there)

*Only being black guarantees the wormie or pupae is dead.

*Mealies do not carry parasites nor do the beetles fly.

*I love the advice of Owensmom's sage-worm-that-pupated.

*Yep, gonna have different sizes of pupae and beetles. I'm not about to cull small beetles....are you? heheheheeeeee

*This old gal ain't gonna put a thermometer in the mealie bin. They are either gonna live or die living like I do. They are bugs.

*That being said....temperature is important, which is why 75% of my growing wormies are living in the oven with the light on 24/7. Who needs a thermometer... ***hahahaaaaaa she says rubbing her hands together in glee****

*LOVE the discussion fellow mealie farmers!

They don't need very much of the fresh vegetables at any one time. Just so there's a little in there. Use only a little and put more in, if they need more. That will keep it from getting too wet or humid in there. It keeps the food from going moldy, too.

A new colony may not be as active, especially at first, depending on what they've been through in transit. I think extremes of temperature can be hard on them.

For my colonies, the Mealworms like carrots and tomato chunks the most, although potatoes are eaten too.

My Superworms prefer a Green Lettuce (Iceberg, Romaine, etc.) over anything else. Other veggies are eaten too, but Lettuce disappears overnight!

Good Evening mealie worm farmers
I have not posted for a while but that has not stopped the colony from growning. I started with 5000 mealworms over the summer and then I had a pupa and beetle explosion. My son fed the girls one worm at a time and had them jumping for each worm. It was awesome. I am on the second generation and LOVING it. All my girls (18) plus the two boys and the gecko are loving the fruits of my labor. My family has just accepted that the meal worm farm is in the dining room and it is not unusual for my DS age 9 and I to be exploring the bin together. DH has even gotten into the farming of worms by giving them some spuds. Even the in-laws don't think twice about checking out the farm. DH specially selected spuds from the garden harvest this fall for the mealies. I love listening to them and watching all the changes. It is such a great learning tool for my DS. I have also started two chicken loving friends on meal worm farming. It was really fun to give them starter farms. What a Christmas gift!! HEE HEE!! I absolutely love this thread and look forward to each post. I have learned so much. Thank you all for your posts. KEEP up the FARMING!!!
