Mealworm farming

I bought all mine as large about two weeks ago. They have started to pupate so I am excited. I was originally going to just have a one bin set up but started having second thoughts. I was going to move the pupa into a separate bin so they wouldn't get eaten or so the beetles would anyone else when the hatch but I am still undecided on what I want to do...lol. But the funny thing was, was when I went to pick up a pupa with my tweezers the tail end part wiggled! I was totally not expecting that to happen...lol.

Yep they wiggle. That's their only defense. I use my trusty little plastic spoon to move the pupae. You're colony will do well together or separated. It's just a matter of choice! Glad you're having fun!

Yay - I got a beetle!

Yes that is sooo exciting...what would be even more exiting for me would be it I had something BESIDES beetles! I am stuck on beetles since the mite invasion...that was quite a while ago...no little wormies to celebrate.

yet....still waiting!
Now I am going into the back room and moving the farm to the living room...maybe DH wont notice? I am so jealous of all of you whose families actually participate! Tonight I was told that the chickens are good for only quadruple priced eggs that we could get a lot cheaper at the store!

It's really hard with our 'significant' other doesn't share our passions. My DH tolerates my love of them and all I do for them but feels there are better ways to spend my time.

Don't worry about your colony....in a short while you'll be seeing tons of babies! If you've had the beetles over a month....look closely. Gently move the substrate (I use a plastic spoon) and then watch....

Don't worry. Your family will come to it in time. My husband thought that I was crazy at first. Now he is sure!! Sell a few eggs(friends or famers market) When you have a few bucks to pay for feed his attitude will change. I speak from first hand experience.
Just enjoy your chickens and don't let the negative attitude get you down.

Becca you're doing great with the farm!!!

silly, I know, but any little thing about them that is exciting, instead of creeping me out, well, it's a good thing.

I saw some superworms in the pet store the other day... MAN those looked big! creepy.
