Mealworm farming

What kind of stores sell mealworms suitable for breeding, I don't want to order thru the mail? I live in Reno so we have plenty of retail here.

I called around to a few local stores in my area and found that Petco was the cheapest....but the meal worms are on the small side, so don't expect anything like what you would receive if you mail order them. I have found the quality through the mail to be much better!

Shoot. I was at a pet store yesterday and forgot to get cricket water. I haven't done any extra water of any kind (other than a wet paper towel once) since I got them back in Sept/Oct but now that I read others do, I feel like I need to.

So what about harvesting? Do you wait until you have so many worms that you can just scoop them up in one handful? Even when I put in a potato half I don't get all that many on it at once.

If my mealworms dont eat the enitre carrot and it feels dry what do I do? Do I toss it and put in a fresh one? Thanks?

Yes, I would. The carrot is meant for moisture.. if it's dry replace it. Their new favorite (my new favorite) is celery stalks. They consume every bit of it.. no shriveled remnants to get moldy or discard.

I don't use potato slices anymore. They had a tendency to get dark pretty quick.. I was discarding them before the moisture was gone.. they just looked like they were getting moldy after a couple of days.

I mainly use Potatoes or Apples. I cut them in 1/2 for the Beetle drawers and then half the potatoes and then cut them into chucks for the worms. If the Potatoes it getting dry then i put them in the Beetle Drawers and they will eat most of it. Potatoes are really cheap also!
