Mealworm farming

I don't think it takes much exposure for some people. Other than getting them out with a slotted spoon to feed the chickens/frogs/finches, I don't do anything to the worms anymore. They are outside on my deck, I will need to bring them in soon because it'll be too cool/wet in Seattle. If I didn't have the frogs, I honestly think I would give up on the worms. The frogs will only eat living, moving food, and crickets were too hard for me to keep alive.

Well, many of my almost dead worms (from mold last week) have turned int deformed beetles, with about half looking healthy. I already have dead beetles though, so I'm wondering, did my beetles that died lay any eggs before they died? Are my deformed beetles going to lay eggs? I'm very worried I will not have many baby worms :(

Other than that, I now have them in wheat bran and the boxes are clean with sliced potatoes in them, seems good, but worms are sluggish :(

Give it about a day or so I think the deformed beetles at least most right themselves, I think they are just slow to normalize after a molt b/c I notice them then all of a sudden they aren't there anymore, and I see very few dead deformed beetles.

I have a question for those that are having allergic reaction problems, how are you getting so much exposure? I never sift through frass or anything like that, so just curious.
In my case it only happens when I did an overhaul. At some point in the raising process the frass builds up to a level that it needs removed. Doing that in a closed room was a very bad idea.....well that and the fact I had no idea I was allergic to it. Now that I know I have no problems with it at all.

This is what it's all about!!!!!

You don't need a lot of exposure to get a reaction. I've only tipped the whole lot into another container and spent 20 minutes sorting through to remove dead worms in my kitchen, and could see (and smell) a little fine dust as I tipped them out. Inhaling even that amount was enough to bring on coughing, itchy nose (a classic sensitivity indicator) and sneezing. The worms are still inside covered by a sheet of thick paper. Next time I sort, I'll take them outside and wear a mask - no problem once you know about it.

Made an interesting discovery. I have been giving my week old chickie doos some small dubias and mealworms for a couple of days now today I fed a few dubia then a few mealies then put them both out at the same time, they prefered the mealies! Suprised me.

Okay, been away for a while. Busy, busy for the summer.

I was wondering...does anyone know....do spiders really like meal worm eggs or newborns?

We had 4 trays of wheat bran that we had taken beetles out of and set them on the top self of our meal worm stack. They have dates on them so we know it has been 3 months or less since we put them up there. When we took them down to check on them there are webs all through the top of the bran and there isn't a baby to be seen. Nothing. Nada!

There has been an invasion of long legged small spiders this summer in the house and we have spent countless hours killing the blasted things. Never thought about them getting into the meal worm containers and eating the eggs or newborns but really....what do spiders eat, after all?

I think I have been set back on my production now with this discovery. Usually at this time frame they would be crawling all over each other, even if small. There is nothing.
