Mealworm farming

Hi y'all! I am TOTALLY new to this and I thought I would never, ever be able to even touch these things let alone RAISE THEM!!! My husband and kids think I have lost my mind, but hey it saves money plus the chickies LOVE them...and I'll just about do anything for my babies. ;) So my current question is...are there pictures here on how everyone keeps their meal worm farms? Right now I have what I purchase from Amy in one of those plastic shoe box containers.

In the house and no screens???? Are you sure you don't have a rodent????

That gecko is awesome, sure hope we have those here.

Oh, I agree about the possibility of a rodent. They could do some damage too. I think you do have them in OK (the geckos). They are more common in densely populated areas. You usually find them on the outside of the house around an exterior light at night. We have them by the thousands here on our little property. The chickens LOVE to eat them. In fact, I believe they are their favorite treat.

Congratulations! Look at the links in the first page of this thread for different methods and containers for raising them.

Sandy, have you gone to my website and looked through the meal worms page yet? I figured surely you must have! LOL

If you want to start going through all these pages you will see lots of different set ups. There are a lot of pages on this thread but they are filled with so much info!

No screens on top of the bins. And the AC running all the time so the windows are not open. There are 4 house cats and 1 dog that will catch anything that moves. If I had rodents I would think I would see droppings.

One of the bins that has had no growth is on my bathroom wire shelf in my closet. Again, only spider webs and spiders that I have seen.

I never thought you didn't have lids on them. I drilled holes in the lids and put newspaper over them and they are doing fine. I have two containers done and one more that I started but needed wheat germ and oats. Here are some pic's these are Amy's worms all arrived in great shape not one dead

I tried that and got a disaster, a build up of amonia and mold that nearly destroyed my whole colony.

Hmmm...yeah, I'd take those lids off. It's only a matter of time. If you're worried about them climbing out, cut out the inside parts of the lids and glue (or silicone) a screen panel to cover the hole.
