How bea-u-ti-ful! I love Angela, Alonzo and Annie!!! Did you use super glue or the tags with the little string? Geesh...makin' them work dragging a tag around. You'll have buff wormies!

We're soooo proud of you! You GO girl!!
It takes weeks for them to pupate and then morph into beetles. It's a slow process but once you're there, it's amazing.

Go Worms Go!

OK, thanks I am going away for 10 days on the 22nd of July will I need a unwilling volunteer to look after them ?

I have forgotten about mine for about 2 weeks and they did fine. They didn't have any food when I finally checked on them and were very hungry when I put more in but they did not starve and I did not see any mass death.

Just put in food before you leave and if someone is home tell them to drop in more (I would put a measured amount in a baggie in the fridge) about 5 days in. But if not then I would not worry. They are quite hardy.

Remember....they eat the substrate (wheat/oats/etc) and the veggie/fruit is for moisture. I've had batches of mine in the fridge for weeks with only the oats and they still pupated.

Because my chickens can't free range (live in a small neighbor hood, small yard) and I have to put them in a wire chicken run so they can get grass they don't get bugs. I'll buy crickets for my Venus Flytrap and give the extras to them and I save the worms I don't use when I'm fishing and give them to the hens. They love them!

The first two are of my worm bin and the last is my beetle bin. Note the paper towel roller--roller coaster for worms!!

What a tough week. I've lost 2 of my young chickens to a preditor (unknown). I went outside a bit ago to find the second gone. I can't believe this.

The best thing about having the chickens (for me) is enjoying them being outside. They come to the deck when I call because I'll drop them grapes or berries or worms.....they follow us around....they are always entertaining with chasing bugs, scratching, unplanting something DH just planted in the garden. In the heat of the day, they come onto the breezeway and sit in front of the door and I can see their little heads pop up when I walk past.

I don't mind cleaning the poo of the porchs and sidewalk....they are worth it. (and even on top of the hot tub cover...naughty birds)

They are going to be so unhappy locked up in our little coop/run but I really have no choice. Guess those meal worms will need to grow even faster now.

They have done a great job of keeping stink bugs and ticks under control....wow...this is terrible but the preditor won.
