Mealworm farming

Okay the official count is 43 pupa and I've separated them. Mine are in an add on to the house. It's fluctuating heat right now so I put a heating pad under half of the tote on low. I think that's what kick started the pupating.

I have mealworms, but I have been feeding chicks a lot too. So, I just ordered 2000 more from Rainbowmealworms.net I also used the BestCustomer coupon code and it took off $7.25. My total was $9 I use the one bin method, but I check twice a day for pupae and put them in a small butter dish(in the larger bin) I also had ants try to attack so I have a Sevin dust hill around the container. Lol mine are outside and it's been 100* here in TX for 2 weeks. I had them inside at first, but we keep it way too cold for them in our house.
Wow that rocks. I almost want to jump on it. 2,000 for me is $3.90 shipped after coupon! I just started a colony 2 weeks ago in a 10 gallon tank with 500 worms. I have about 40 pupa already.

Do you think 2,000 more worms would be too many for a 10 gallon tank? How about the smell? I only have 6 chickens. Not sure they could eat that many.

Thoughts??

I'm in love with the price!

No I think it will be fine. Go for it

How common is it for mealworms to give tapeworms? I have some young pullets with tapeworms and they've been getting mealworms I've raised. I saw that darkling beetles either can be or are tapeworm carriers. Anyone know about this?

i want to say i've seen people talking about how they have 20,000 or so in a container that size.

on a sidenote (to everyone) - if you have a compost pile, you may already have black soldier fly larvae, which are very high in calcium and good for layers.

they tend to congregate everywhere, not just compost. a friend has some under her chicken coop, another has some under rabbit cages.

Yeah I'm building up my compost pile right now I just can't keep it moist enough with the heat and I have a lack of water, but in the winter I'm going to tarp half of it and see how that goes.

Edit-and 20,000? really? that's a lot of worms in one bin!

Darkling beetles are hosts of tapeworms. It didn't say anything about meAlworm stage though. So many people feed them, I don't see the worms having worms. Lol but I do not know. Will try to find out :)
