Mealworm farming

I finally gave up with my mealworms experiments, I have a TON of them... I just dumped them all in a kinda big tote and gave them some baby carrot chunks to munch on... the room they're in is pretty humid too so I'm not worried about them... I've got a 20 gal fish tank in there and it has lost 3 gal in less than a month to evaporation so all that water is going into the air in that room... One odd thing they did, I tossed some cardboard egg cartons in there with them and a bunch of them (20-30 at least) climbed up on top of one and snuggled down in one of the dips in a big pile... I started worrying if they could get out, so I dumped them all back down in the bedding, I'll see if they get up there again...
Actually, I have egg cartons in 1 of my drawers and they are all over it all the time. Both worm and beetles. I am sure some of the eggs will be laid on there (in my bin).

That is how 1 guy separates his live from his dead and pupa. He just dips the carton, they crawl on and he transfers to their new bins.

So it is completely normal!

I'm buried in worms, Thinking of selling some on craigslist as my chickens can't eat them all. What would you all say is a fair price? I don't want to buy anymore totes. I'm feeding wheat bran, oatmeal, apples, and carrots constantly. they are becoming more work than the chickens, lol.

start to dry them, or start p;utting them in the fridge, then they'll go dormant until you take em out again, or you can just freeze em. id say a couple bucks (2.50) for every 25 or so as large worms, 2.75 for 25 pupas, and 2.00-3.00 for 25 beetles. then maybe 2.50-3.00 for smaller 50 count worms

Drying is not a bad idea, if you want to mess with that.
I'd look at what the local pet stores sell them for, and maybe even online prices, then go from there.
Start your prices higher than you think you want, easier to come down than go higher if you find the market in your area is good. Do you want to ship or just local?

Could one of you more experienced mealworm farmers help me figure out what I'm looking at here?

I'm starting to see little beetles and grubs in my mealworm trays. I think the first beetle is a darkling beetle? What do you guys think? This is the only one of its kind that I've seen so far.

I'm also seeing a bunch of much smaller black beetles. All of these were taken with the same magnification. In the second photo, there's a small dark speck that is one of those other beetles. It's on the wall in the middle of the photo, right by the grains. Do you guys think those are darkling beetles as well, or something different?

And finally, it's been really dry here so I sprayed some water on the oats to keep it moist. I overdid it and ended up with some mold, third picture. I was picking out the chunks of mold and noticed that some of them have a bunch of little larvae, like the one pictured. Are those mealworms? Or something else?

Just trying to figure out if the creatures I'm growing are actually the ones I want to be growing. Thanks for your help!

Yes, the big reddish one is a darkling beetle, it may stay that color or turn almost black. The little beetle is something else, don't know what though, and I think the larva might be a mealworm, but I don't see segments, so not sure.

OK, thank you! So, at this point, given that I have something else in there, would it be a good idea to start a new tray with new grains and just manually move over any darkling beetles I see into the new tray? And eventually give the old tray and all of its inhabitants to the chickens to eat? Or should I just scrap it and order new mealworms and start over?

When I bought the grains from the feed store there were webs all over them, like you see with pantry moths. I put everything in the freezer for about a week before I put the mealworms in it but it's possible it didn't kill everything. Also the mealworms are sitting next to my compost bin, which is teaming with different creatures, and the cricket cage that we are using to feed our tarantula, and my kids often forget to put lids back on all of them, so it wouldn't be at all astonishing if some other creature eyed the new mealworm real estate and decided to move in. There are lots of possibilities.

the cage looks very moldy. I would recommend moving everything out and starting over. or just feed all ur bugs to the chickens, and trash ur old bedding and get new worms to start with.

mold is very bad to have in a cage as it can start to affect the inhabitans, and spread to cover the rest of the food, spoiling it
