Mealworm farming

Pics
Ok, so I spent the last couple of days reading thru this thread. I have decided to definitely raise meal worms. My only question at this point is should I go ahead and start them? I don't have my chickies yet. Should I get them started before the birds arrive or wait until after they get here? One of my 14 yr old boys has claimed the meal worm farm. He said I have all the other animals, I can at least let him raise the bugs.

Your signature line says you'll be getting the chickens this fall, I'd go ahead and start the mealworms. It takes a few months to get it going well and gives you a little time to work out any "bugs" no pun intended, really.

Do it tomorrow! It takes time to get it going to the stage where you'll feel like you can feed worms. Plus your son will have great fun growing them. Good luck getting your chickens.

Your wormies have been shipped and I also PMed you the tracking ##.
Hope your chickens will love them. They are beautiful golden large.

Well, Uncle Jim's rep is on the line again...or maybe I should say the US Post Office. My worms were shipped from Philly on Monday and the email says to expect them Wed (today) or Thursday. I have their drawer all ready and comfy cozy. That is pretty acceptable but the only thing is the tracking still says they are in Harrisburg and have been there since 5am yesterday morning. I am hoping their scanning system is just off. I hope they have not really been stuck at the same p.o for over 24 hrs!!! I will be surprised if they come today, it's just that most if not all experience I have had with tracking pkgs has been accurate. I am getting composting worms as well and they really can't handle the heat. It is cooler this week here than last but it is still very hot. I am going to try not to stand at the end of my driveway looking for my mailman all morning!

I got stuffs to do ya know!

I was supposed to get an email confirming shipment from Exoticnutrition on Monday and haven't heard a word. I was hoping to get them today. New bin all set up and ready except for the veggies which I will place in there before I go pick them up from the PO.

Didn't think about going ahead and putting veggies in. I have some celery out of the garden may go ahead and put them in. Hope yours come as well!

Thank you!! Yes, my son is all about animals for food...catching, hunting, fishing, whatever, and even feeding the food that is still running around. LOL

Thanks! That's kinda what I was hoping for~

My Grandaughter & I were looking for pupa in our worms and found one that was shedding it's last worm skin ! She was so very excited (she's 3) that she started dancing & singing her mewly made up " my wormie is is poopa" song. We have got our first beetle too.... our farm is moving right along.

Welcome LittleDarlings! You and the kids are really going to enjoy the whole chicken/meal worm experience. I really got a chuckle when you said the worm farm is already claimed by one of your sons! So cool!!!
