Mealworm farming

I just ordered my meal worms/ starter kits from bnewns. I can't wait to get started on yet another worm adventure, lol! These will take up less space than my composting worms and I don't think I'll have an issue feeding them to my flock. My composting worms I like to keep working. I'm trying to build up enough numbers to handle the horse manure . . .

I give 8-10 each on my LF and the smaller birds get around 5-7 if I'm showing them (tends to build a large comb on the roos) If I'm not showing a can double it but I don't feed everyday
Really? I know that rooster combs can grow quite large in hot environments so they can dissipate their body heat. I wonder if the mealworms cause their bodies to get hot, like oats to a horse, and so the comb grows bigger to dissipate heat? I'm thinking winter time here... if these little gems can cause my birds to warm up, I would definitely save them to add to their evening meals in the dead of winter when it drops well below zero around here!

Anybody else noticed this? Does anyone have any input on this idea?

Quote: I know that feeding both meal worms and kracked corn will help a chicken survive the winter if its really cold. When I have a bird sick I usually give it meal worms and yogurt to keep it eating. Most birds no matter how sick they are will not refuse a freezed dried meal worm (I would not give it live, because it might take to long for the crop to digest)

I am having trouble finding wheat bran. Anyone in the north Ga area have suggestions where to buy it? I would like to try meal worm farming if i can find a place to get this. Thanks

I get mine at the local feed store, much cheaper then the health food stores. You can get it at Wholefoods, sprouts and any store that has bulk bins. Usually runs about a dollar a lb. The 40 lb bag runs me about $18.00 at the feed store

Thanks. We dont have either of those stores. I know i can order it online if i have to. Was just trying to find somewhere Local to save shipping costs :)

I'm willing to sell you some at my cost and I'll vacuum seal it and can send it by priority Regional A box. Should fit a lot once its vacuumed packed. It's about .45 cents a lb.

Hi everyone!
Thank you all for the orders of meal worms. I am trying to keep up as fast as I can. They are growing and developing faster in the warm spring air, as we open our windows and let the warm fresh air in after dealing with cold wet winter air. We raise our meal worms in our home so we can control more of their environment. I lost my living room to plastic bins and lots of shelving but get enjoyment from watching my chicks and breeder birds have a blast grabbing their treats!

As for feeding meal worms and it making the combs larger, I have never noticed it and I show my birds. Maybe it varies with breed but large combs is something I have not had to deal with in my birds. When I feed meal worms I take about 500 out to the show pens and they get about 50 in their feed dishes several times a week.

Please bear with me as we continue to harvest the mealies for shipments and I try to answer everyone's emails.
