Mealworm farming

How long is the pupa stage? I found a couple spots in the internet that say 6 to 18 days and others that say 2 to 3 months.

Thank you.

I've read that too and this is my first time trying it!

I just picked out a few dead worms(they turn black)
I found some new pupae and some BABY worms. Yay!!!
good job! So do you pull out the beetles? or do you have a shelf system? I need to get shelves but I just haven't had the time here lately.

I have been breeding for about 7 months now and have about 50,000 mealworms all in different stages. I purchased another 2000 recently from a large on-line mealworm breeder. I wanted to add to my beetle count. I put those worms in a separate bin from my second generation worms. The ones I purchased are starting to pupate but they are tiny compared to my second generation.
Why would those worms pupate so much smaller then the others? I have had them for about a month and they are being raised the same as my second generation. Most are even small then the one in the photo below. I am wondering if they will produce less eggs then the large beetles.

I haven't had mealworms that long at all, but could it be from the stress of shipping? I know stress causes a lot of other animals to do things prematurely maybe it's the same with them. Or they could be a different kind of mealworm that just doesn't get as big.

Wow that rocks. I almost want to jump on it. 2,000 for me is $3.90 shipped after coupon! I just started a colony 2 weeks ago in a 10 gallon tank with 500 worms. I have about 40 pupa already.

Do you think 2,000 more worms would be too many for a 10 gallon tank? How about the smell? I only have 6 chickens. Not sure they could eat that many.

Thoughts??

I'm in love with the price!

What is the code? Or where did you find it?

In February I ordered 1000 meal worms. I originally had them in 4 containers, but one had oat bran as a test and they didn't seem to like to dig in so I split them up and moved them into the other 3. they went from worms to pupae to beetles and I seemed to have plenty wheat bran, but a few weeks ago I noticed there was more frass than substrate. so I brought some more wheat bran and added it in, last week I noticed that all the wheat bran had been consumed.... yikes so I decided to sift through, gave the dead beetles to the girls, and basically get the worms/beetles/pupae out of the nasty frass and skin. holy moley, I've only done two of the three containers because it look a LOT longer than I had anticipated, but I was sooo surprised with how much they multiplied. by the time I was almost done there was 50 or so that either fell onto the newspaper or still in the squash I had in there, so I just gave that all to the birds. i'm afraid that they're going to eat all the new substrate quickly again after seeing that they can do to a squash chunk in a day. Now I see why people just so ahead and put them in a 10G tank. At this point I wouldn't feel bad about giving them lots and lots of worms and I think i'd have plenty reproducing for winter.
