Mealworm farming

Haven't you heard? They do great while being ignored. Give them a big layer of bran and stick them in a corner.

Failing everything else, let your birds "pig out" a couple of times. They'll love you for it.

Try roasting the sweet potato so it is soft and sweet. The chickens LOVE roasted sweet pot. That will be their Thanksgiving treat.
Got another bin going. This one is a 34 Qt from Walmart. All set up with substrate and sitting on the heating pad. Will transfere the pupae and beetles in a little while. I was having premature dying off of pupae. They were not morphing. The room that they are in is 60* and kinda cool. So I put my other bins on a heating pad. The worms are going crazy so decided to put the new bin on a heating pad and hope to improve their situation. Will see how it goes.

I've read where several "worm farmers" are putting their bins on heating pads. Most heating pads shut off after an hour. How does your set-up work to keep the pad warm? It sounds like it may be a good idea as the temps start going down.

Hey all - anyone tried a seedling heat mat instead of a heating pad?

Seems safer, waterproof, keeps seedlings 10 degrees above the ambient temp, thinking about bringing one home. Also can get a thermostat to regulate heat better if needed.

Actually Nifty Chicken...why don't you freeze them and feed them out to your chickens over the winter? I've put the larva, pupae and beetles in the freezer. Let them thaw for 5-10 minutes and toss em to the chickadees.
