mealworms

Since the heat has been on here, a LOT of mine didn't make it.
It is all good because I STILL FEED TO HENS ! They didn't care. I gave them 2 cups of dried up beetles/worms and the skins that were shedded, along with some of the oats/wheat bran they were in.

Gone completely ! not a scrap left, just the apple pieces I had int he bowl

:)

I felt bad at first but not now.
I have a TON of beetles. and they are quieter then the worms hahahaha

Werd! I started over because i forgot about the mealies and they froze..I'm terrible, sometimes it's bad they're so quiet. But the chickens ate everything out of the frozen graveyard, didn't even hesitate.

I’m so frustrated because I’ve just started and only a couple of beetles have made it so far. I’m now at about 100 that didn’t develop all the way. I’m usinging soft wheat bran and some oats. For moisture I’ve used carrots, potatoes and cucumber. They don’t seem interested in any of the veggies. I change them every other day. Also have damp paper towel over them and humidifier going. Temp in room is around 70-75 but I can’t seem to get humidity much past 30 with the furnace running.

@Tlc4jtkm mine are in the Office with me on a shelf (covered with a cotton sheet around it so DD doesn't see them). 2 buckets at in Wheat bran and oats with older used egg cartons. I toss in a hand full of baby carrots 1-2 times a week.
Some develop some not. The hens will eat them too ;)
I admit I had over 6000 worms to start with.
Too bad you don't live near me, I would give away some of these beetles I have !!

I DO NOT put mine in the basement because even though the furnace keeps one side warmer, it would still be too cold I think. Maybe around 60 ?

I have them in my office also. I will just keep trying. I’m feeling like this could be a batch of not so healthy mealworms also. They never eat any of the veggies I put in and they don’t seem to be very big before they turn to pupae. I will just keep trying. I sure wish you lived closer I’d love to get a bunch of beetles!

mealworms are different then Superworms. as the latter is LARGE.
So large that I will only give the mealworms.

I did swap 1000 mealies for Supers one day a couple months ago. My son has 2 breaded dragons and the mealies are too small for them.

Wish the life stages were Faster from beetle to worm ;)

Ok for those waiting for the beetles to breed and you are not sure if you have wormmies.
Just wait till you see all the Sheddings !! I gave a carrot last week and went in today to give more and take out the old . They are in the basement now BTW.

All I see is a Mound of shavings ! I was like HUH ?

Yup all sorts of tiny wormies !!! YAY !!

2 out of 3 boxes have shavings in it.
Once Spring comes i will bring them outside and shift/sort them all out into the same bin for wormies and beetles in another.

So a rough guess is 3 months till you can SEE wormies
