I have a pen I call male jail. I have been keeping about 5-10 males in it for the past 5-6 months maybe. No casualties so far, there’s usually one that gets to be the “girl” and he usually looks a little rough, but no injuries. I keep it covered with a tarp except the front, which faces west so it only gets direct light in the afternoon. There’s also a bunch of hides and cinderblocks to break line of sight. I kept about 5 for maybe 3 months, then I started raising 23 sex link hens to sell when they start laying. In order to be able to offer people free males to go with their hens, I kept 5 boys and added them to male jail a couple weeks ago. Not long after, they were joined by my nasty boy Prince. If you keep the roos in a separate cage, they tend to leave their mating instincts behind. I'm not sure a simple divider between roos and hens will work though. Roos may need a separate cage out range from the females.
Anyone here have experience keeping them close together? Will the males compete among themselves for females nearby but out of reach?
There were maybe 11 for a couple weeks but I’ve started selling the hens and someone accidentally lost a male I sold them and I replaced it, so there’s only 6 right now. I also don’t acclimate any birds to change in general, I mist them all with vinegar water and they usually do fine, any that don’t, get a few squirts when they aggress. Usually that settles them down, anyone who doesn’t get along gets a supper invite.
