Mean Rooster

I have a 26 week old Rooster who has become so mean that I feel like I have no other option but give him away or eat him. He does a great job protecting but I cant get to my hens at all and they are very social sweet flock. anything I can do? He just started this! he is crazy acting!!

I had one like that once. A RIR. I got on top of him & held him down for about a good minute. Let him know you're top roo. He was the best rooster ever since! It's all about dominance. Every time he goes at you, go at him & do this exercise every time. He will tire of it real quick!

Unfortunately we had the same problem. But in this case no matter the amount of dominance we showed he still wouldn't back off the hens and had them all worked up. We ended up going to a new home with 32 hens (we only have 9) so hopefully he will feel a little less 'in power'. I preferred to have my happy sweet flock then a bunch of upset hens.

Wow, stubborn roo! I've had my share of good roos. I won't put up with nasty ones for very long. Most roos I find, would rather avoid me than fight me.

I have a 21 week old newhampshire red rooster heis a good protecter of is flock. he has started being real aggressive with me the last month or so. he attacked me 3 times and he drw blood on me this last time he came at me from behind and dug up my leg I bled for 15 minutes. now I go in the run with a 2x4. the first 2 times he charged the fence when I was on the otherside picking up a escaped hen.

Shellz forgot to tell you she carries a shotgun with her at all times. Ha ha! We just rehomed a rooster for the same reasons. He never really liked us in the coop or run area with his hens. In reality, they are his and just yours to look at and feed. We got in the habit of carrying a lawn leaf rake to shoo him away or give him a whack once in a while if he became too aggressive while we gathered eggs or were feeding and cleaning and so on. Getting a hold of him and hanging on until he realizes you are in control and not him can sometmes help like shellz suggests. Doesnt always work but keep repeating until he backs off. If that doesnt work, soup does!

Life is too short to be wasting your time on a stubborn, aggressive rooster. I won't put up with the stress.
In this case, a .22 will do. I did have a couple of disturbing cockerels that needed to be taken care of. I know its hormones, but I've had many roos that were never so much trouble. I have an EE cockerel right now that's being a bad in the flock. It's time for freezer camp soon for him & his buddies.

The leaf rake is an excellent idea until you can get a handle on the situation. Chickens (for me at least) are for food & pleasure of company. They are to be enjoyed. If they are not fun or enjoyable, what's the point? There's my 2 cents. I wish you luck!
