My chickens are 4 months old. (24 hens & 1 rooster). I have 12 RIR's, 2 Americaunas, 9 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster.

The rooster has started this week, basically attacking the hens, right at the neck and holding on and won't let go. The hens really scream the whole time this is going on.

Is this normal, or is the rooster way too aggressive?

I appreciate any help on this behavior.

thanks

It is normal mating behavior, the rooster is maturing and learning how to assert his dominance over the hens.

In mating he holds the hen by the back of the neck then mounts her.

It can seem kind of brutal when they first start to learn how, but it will become easier on the hens as time goes by.

Thanks rooster red!!!

I'm glad it's normal, but it does look pretty brutal.

Thanks!!!!

There is not much romance in chicken love.
