We have teenagers... that run and think its funny when one of the roosters are coming after them. Our 3 big roosters cant get out of the run unless I let them free range but the mean lil bantam can and does fly over anytime he wants so if I know someones coming over with lil kids I lock him in his cage... dont want him floggin them!!!

Thank You............ Guess its time for some chicken dinner.

I have 5 roos, 3 seramas, 1 mutt, and one cochin bantam. I had alot more but the "mean roos" had to go. I do pen up the seramas seperate so the mutt roo can't kill those boys and mess with their girls. I agree with the others. Time for a big batch of roo stew! I had a white cochin boy who flogged me every chance he'd get. I tried everything to calm him down but he just wouldn't stop, he also went after other people and kids. That to me was unacceptable and I certainly didn't want an angry parent knocking at my door because of it so off he went to a farm where he was the only chicken.

Thanks... and I was thinking, its not very fun having chickens if you cant enjoy them. I hate always being on guard.... I wont even be doing anything and I walk out of my way to stay away from the floggers, Big Daddy and Sally Sue will still come after me! Its like I'm a prisoner in my own yard. No Fun and not... bet my girls will be alot happier too.

I absolutely agree with everyone on here who's philosophy is "Life is too short to put up with mean roos," and "there's another roo lookin' for a chance to grow up and be a great roo." Roo's are a dime a dozen, even pretty good lookin' ones, but really GOOD roos are kind of hard to find and I'm talking about the guys that are kind to their women and fun for us to be around. When you run into one, they are truly a joy to be around and they warm your heart. They even make work in the pen, run, flock or yard a little easier. They take care of the flock, protect the girls, break up fights and generally keep order. They breed matter of factly, without blood and trauma........to me, they are one of natures little wonders.
I could sit and watch them for hours.

A mean rooster just makes me want to kill him.

Disposition IS inherited and I don't want any of that mean stuff bred into my birds. I want the "GOOD ROO QUALITIES" bred into mine. If he isn't nice to me AND his girls, he's GONE!!! One way or another.
Oh and by the way, I've never heard of one having a change of heart, it goes back to the old story about the snake..............he's a snake....he can't help himself.

You so right!! My BLRW is AMAzing with my 2 yr old, he always calls his girls over to eat, and keeps a very close watch out!! We previously had a White Leghorn that was horrible he eventually flogged my son, his life came to an end.

Sure know how you feel. We have 4 roos here. 2 nice, 2 meanies. The big guy loves to flog me. He occasionally will go after my 2 sons and my DH, but never my oldest son who the roo belongs to. He can just go right up to him and scoop him up. He won't let me get rid of him. He does protect his girls, but I hate walking around the yard with a stake (pointy metal side out). The little meanie is a mix OEGB. He is the smallest chicken we have, but has the biggest attitude. He may be leaving shortly. Youngest DS hatched this 1 out, but as this one flogs everyone he is willing to give this 1 up.
