I have 3 silkies. It was suppose to be 2 girls & 1 boy. Of course, our second girl started to crow! The girl was never friendly and we kind of let her be, but the two boys were always good with the kids. Well they are now 5-6 months olds, and the boys have turned mean. I'm not really interested in have a large group of silkies, but they never integrated with my BOs. The BOs seem to think they are annoying little pets and stay away from them. I don't feel that I can get rid of both boys, because she will then be alone. Or will this force her to mingle with the BOs? Would things calm down and go back to normal if I get rid of one of the boys? I'm thinking of rehoming all three, but I fell bad about doing this to my kids. Even though they aren't interacting much with them now, they are still their pets. Should I try to get rid of the two boys and get another hen? Just looking for suggestions!

If they are mean to you and your kids I would get rid of them asap!!!
Most silkies are really sweet but every now and then you will get a mean one. You don't want to keep them
if they are mean bc if they have babies they could pass on that mean temperment.
Tell the kids you will get them something that they can enjoy and I'm sure they will be fine???

That's what I was told too. Our pet chickens were attacked by our x-neighbors dogs.

I went out and got 3 silkies peeps for my kids, because they are suppose to be extra sweet. I thought it would get their minds off the loss of our other girls. They loved the 2 boys and it seemed good. The girl isn't mean, just prefers to be left alone. The boys always came over, and the kids would cuddle with them. Then boom...puberty hits. I have a BO rooster that actually protects me from them. It doesn't hurt, but I can't turn around without one of them latching onto my pant leg. The black one pecked my youngest in the chest hard enough to hurt. I wont let them near him any more. Like a typical mother, i just keep thinking what if it was his face or eye.

Any other thoughts! I am leaning towards getting rid of them. It is just hard to do after keep them for so long. and like I said they boys were good at first....

I too have some mean roo's they are good breeders and type so I keep them they just do not get to free range around my kids.

If your wanting pets I suggest getting rid of the roosters and getting some more silkie pullets if that is what you desire.

Yep I too have noticed some silkies are not at all what is described about them

I have given 8 away now

I say keep the one that is nice

Xoxo
