Meat birds as quality family time... REALLY! *GRAPHIC*

Yummy Mommy, That is one great looking roast chicken!

I have to look into getting some of those cross's, as I like a big chicken to cook as well. Some of the fryers they sell at the market, I can eat almost a whole one myself.

So who did the deed with the axe? Surely the kids haven't graduated to that point in the help have they? I can only dream of getting help in dressing, plucking, etc.. I can't see any of my family handling the birds, and still enjoy eating them. Other than myself of course...

Nice tat's by the way!

Wow! You guys did a great job! Beautiful family. My boys are pretty good about helping when we process as well. I should say all but my 11 year old. He cannot be anywhere near when the actual culling of the bird is done or he cries huge tears. Once we get past that part however, he helps pluck or whatever.

I am that way, I can't kill em, but I don't mind plucking and cleaning...my hubby dispatches our animals, I help butcher them, our kids help to, and we all eat em! yum!

those are come tasty looking chickens!!

Those carcasses look to be in the 5 to 6 lb range, not that huge, but big enough.

Did you weigh them Menageriemama?

Jim

I just bought a whole chicken from the store and it was just over three pounds. So, to me, 5-6 lbs is huge!

I can not wait to start keeping meat birds. But it will be another year and a half before we can purchase more land.(sigh)

Thanks- and we have the same problem with "regular" sized chickens, as my husband is a big eater, and my oldest son eats about as much as I do! We do the hang 'em up by the feet and slit the neck method. Just our preference. I usually do the deed because I have better knife skills than the DH

The kids have seen the whole shebang though, and have no real problem with it after "the talk" we had when we first decided to get meat birds. Hope you are able to do it some day- its very rewarding
