Meat Birds VS Pets

Well, I am sure he does!!!

I was talking about the Jumbo Cornish X. I had a Barred Rock Roo with a wonderful personality. Guess I didn't think of him as a meat bird.

mine are my pets as well. My dh used to say he was going to get a shirt made that said " My pet makes me breakfast." on the front and then" And someday will make me dinner" on the back.

I think he has since changed his mind:p

When my mom and dad bought the house my mom still lives in back in the late 60s they bought it because it had land and my mom wanted horses. Story goes my dads sister said "Well now you can raise hens for eggs and meat" To which my dad replied "L will have elderly chickens walking around with canes. They wont be dinner" He was right. But I cant imagine him ever doing that either. And they never had chickens. But we did have horses and llamas

One of DW's nephews visits on occasion and over the past couple of years expressed increasing interest in our flock. He bought 40 layers this spring and we split the cost on 100 Cornish X (he has a larger setup). We processed the Cornish in one afternoon. On the way home with our half of the haul, we engaged in a somewhat distracted debate about whether she was the walrus and I was the carpenter, or vice versa...

Be that as it may, our flock of feathered symbionts in our backyard will be sustained and protected to a fare-thee-well.

It has been 25 years since I have butchered a chicken, I think it could come back. Right now we have 9 birds for eggs but I am thinking about a second coop next spring for Meat birds or should I just let them live with the hens? Don't worry if I butcher I will make sure the hens don't see it happen. Just thinking about getting meat birds next spring.

If I had the time, space and money to raise meat birds I'd do it...the differences between the way they are raised compared to layers are SO different from what I've read on the meat birds thread that I doubt I'd have a problem.

While I dont have any meat birds yet; I dont have a problem killing them for food.
I also hate seeing poultry trucks. They are so cruel!

I even worked at Purdue for a few years. Boy....

the stories I could tell you!
You would never want to eat commercial meat again!

I am 100% sure my birds will be treated much better than Purdue treats them!

You should love your food! Not hide it away and mistreat it as commercial people do.
Thats why I want a meat flock!
My view anyways!
