What is your favorite meat breed (other then Cornish or Cornish crosses)?

What are some good heritage meat chicken breeds?

Rangers are another cross meatie...but slower growing and far more like a regular chicken as far as behavior is concerned.

What are they crossed with and where are they obtained?

Are there any other non-cross meat birds that people like?

Araucanas. Technically not a "meat" breed but they're great dual purpose birds that, if the right breeding, can pack a lot of good, tasty, tender meat in a smaller body.

Plus, they're rare, beautiful, and very intelligent.

Traditionally the five most praised breeds for meat quality are the Dorking, La Fleche, Houdan, Crevecoeur, and Old English Game. We raise Dorkings for our roasters. Brahmas were a favorite for quite a while on account of their size and soft meatedness. The Plymouth Rock is praised for quality. The Wyandotte and Dominique for presentation. The Sussex and Faverolles are also quite delicious.

So many wonderful, purebred, heritage fowl to choose from! Bon appetit!
