So last night something injured one of our male ducks, killed one of our meat chickens (ripped its head off and ate insides), severely wounded another meat chicken (which we just put out of her misery) She was attacked 3-5 hours ago and we just killed her and was going to process her to eat. Was wondering now if this is a good idea considering we dont know what got her, and if her meat is tainted now. Were in the mountains of Eastern NC so predators are numerous. Was thinking Raccoons, but there is a feral cat that creeps around but not sure if its capable of this sort of carnage. and if im not mistaken, raccoons usually get one and take off. This animal either came back a few times or there was several of them. .. any thoughts on that either? Thanks!

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

Very sorry for your loss and injuries. :(

I process these accidents for my freezer and haven't faced any issues YET. I will continue to do so until I find reason not to.

Sounds like coon. But in general I don't worry about rabies or that type of stuff since everything likes chicken dinner and it's well within their normal range of behavior to prey on them.

Hope you get your defenses more secured, as the culprit WILL return looking for the open buffet they made their way into. :fl

Possible.. coon took of the head, rats ate the insides?? Game cam?
