meat chicks

I got 26 Cornish X's vaccinated at McMurray hatchery before they were shipped. They are only a week old but doing GREAT! I believe it cost 14 cents apiece....really worth it to me and I got the vitamins to put in their water to help with leg problems (hopefully).

I have 44 (ordered 50, got no extras and had 5 die in the first 24 hours then one a couple weeks later that I think got smothered) 3 1/2 week old Freedom Rangers. So far, they aren't looking bad. They're getting adult feathers in and look like any typical juvenile chicken... which is pretty silly! They are already bigger than the 8 layer roosters I have in with them that are a week older.

I've taken to calling the Rangers my little meat balls. They are such fat, round little things. Just like little meat malls!

They are eating machines... my gosh... insatiable! I put out 10lbs of feed today and that FINALLY left me with a little bit of feed remaining in the feeders this evening (vs. picked clean with the brats begging at the coop door).

So far (knocking on wood and looking for salt to throw) no problems with cocci. I didn't get them vaccinated, and I'm not feeding a medicated feed. Maybe this is some of the Ranger hardiness showing through? I hope we don't have cocci problems, I won't medicate and I don't want to loose any more birds.

We ordered 25 recieved 26 had them vaccinated for cocc. and mareks. They all seem to be doing great, although they do eat and poop alot( and i thought i was the only one calling them pigs instead of chickens!)

I have 6 cornish X but 1 died today. I'm new to meat birds and I'm kind of nervous wondering why it died. They are about 1 week old.
