meat hens with layers???

I am currently raising 10DC, 6WR,3 Red Rangers 4Production reds and 8 CX( I also have an older flock of RIRs with a barred rock and a couple of cochin bantys thrown in) all living together and Ive only had 1 problem with a trampling incident,and that was their first nite out of the brooder and havent had any more problems like that. but what I do is fill the feeder and when the meaties come a running and crowed the feeder i sprinkle food around on the ground and it realy incourages the chicks to forage so what meaties who forage with the others are working for it after they eat out of the feeder,and what is left in the feeder gets knocked out over the course of the day .It all seems to work out fine and the meaties only get fed every 12 hrs...unless the want to work for it and go scratch it up

Perhaps I am naive, but I expect to keep both together. I will feed them an 18% "all-flock" feed, which is short of the 24% meat bird mix, but my kids also love to take worms, slugs and grubs down to them as "treats." I will leave oyster shell for the egg layers, who are more likely to free range than the CX's are.

First timer here...if I'm majorly screwed up, there is still a chance to correct my course (of course, I only have one coop .

I think some of it depends on the type of other birds you have. My Leghorns were bad for picking on the CX the first time. Watch your birds closely to make sure no one picks on the CX and you might be ok. Make sure your birds have all the nutrition they need. When my cx and egg laying chicks were together this time there wasn't any picking but I removed the CX at 3 weeks.

I feed everybody Purina flock raiser its 20%,but I just read on Hubbards web sight that there birds are "desighned" to do well on 18% feed

It may depend on the breeds of chickens but i was told by the feed store that if i keep my Cornish giant cross with my Red sussex layers then the cornish will eat themselves to death. the layers are supposed to have feed left for them all the time but not the meat birds.I'm going to keep them together for a month. Then I'll separate them.

I only got one coop too which is being built now but i think i'm jus gonna put a temparary wall with chicken wire to separate the layers from the meat birds til slaughter day then the layers will have the whole chicken house and runn to themselves.

i have my cornish x rocks as chicks,and i always have other chicks and i raise them togather until butcher.i have my naked necks,delawares,buff orpingtons,buff brahmas and my meat birds togather
