awesome advice from everybody! so i purchased 2 NZ that are about 7 weeks old. i built a hutch for them and it seems to be working really good. I didnt add the wire floor but that will be next task. So i went to tractor supply and bought a waterer to hang in the cage as soon i turned it over it started leaking water. So i checked the ring in the there and it was seated in the cap. So i went to walmart and bought a different one!!! When i turned this waterer over it was leaking as well. Not as bad but enough that it made a mess in about 10min. Is this normal? Does anyone have a recomendation for a waterer? There drinking out of a bowl right now, but i dont feel that there drinking enough!

With the water bottles, try filling them to the max, then flipping them over forcefully and hit the little doodad at the end. Sometimes that helps it seal. I use the metal dishes (shaped rather like a spade) that the little end is outside the cage and I use the large pop bottles to fill it. Keeps them with plenty of water and it's easy to clean and the bottles are easily replaced.
My sister uses the more expensive plug in heated ones so she doesn't have to bring fresh water constantly in the winter.

I started with bottles and have changed them all for water bowls. I have gotten used to fill them from outside (without having 2open the cage). I feel they drink better and more naturally.
I just got tired of leaking issues and the little metal balls getting stuck on the tip.
:/

how do you keep them from flipping the bowls? Mine make a total mess out of anything that isn't wired in...

I've gotten roughly 8 water bottles from TSC - the clear, white ones. I've had to exchange 3 so far, so I've only gotten 5 working ones.

The ones from Walmart - they're a clear colored plastic with a little design - work much better IMO. The externally fillable ones from TSC also do well as long as you don't fill it to the brim.

The advice about knocking on them roughly...helps sometimes. I think TSC's water bottles are just junk.

Here's a pic... of a cuttie showing you the cups I use

The square ones are great for "good use" of space and in corners is hard to flip them. Even when they are flipped I just put them back where they belong fairly easy. I have no problems with them flipping full ones, just sometimes when they are empty. I usually use those for dry pellets. The others are good cause you can secure them to the wire pushing the two little wires inside and make them anti- flip.

I use them for water and I usually just overflow them to clean them during the week and loosen them to remove when I disinfect all dishes during the weekends. I really hate to deal with the bottles. I have 2 left that are not yet broken and already bought cups to substitute when they begin giving me problems.
