Hi backyard family,
I need some help with my 14 week old Easter egger, Peanut. I left town Friday (my neighbor was refilling water/feed over the weekend). When I came back Sunday evening I noticed a large bump near Peanut’s neck. My neighbor did not say she noticed it when checking on them and saw nothing out of the normal. She’s still eating, drinking, foraging and she can still fly and stretch out her wings. She can also lift up her leg and scratch her body on that side. No visible injuries, blood or lost feathers. She will let me palpate it and feels pretty small and hard, but kind of feels like it’s a joint issue. All my other chickens seem fine. I have a vet appt scheduled for her soon. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Is her neck twisting to one side? Wry neck can cause that and the deformity can feel like bone. Can you identify her crop in her right upper chest? Is should have some food in it if she is eating today. If yyou think she may have wry neck, you can try treating with vitamin E 400 IU and 1/4 tablet of human vitamin b complex daily in some cooked egg. Head injury and vitamin deficiency are the usual causes for wry neck at this age. Here is a good article with pictures of wry neck.

Doesn’t really seem to be twisting. I’ll double check her crop
