so this is onlt the 2nd batch of eggs I've attempted, and with the 1st, I ended up getting a 40lb bag that got moldy. I found a small bag at a local feed store for starter, but it is medicated. Sould I return this? Why is it that baby quail should not have the medicated feed?

Now theres a slight hiccup... Ideally they need "Gamebird starter" not chick starter as it lacks protien as well as many other beneficial ingredients quail need. Depending on the birds and the chicken chick starter formula you may well experience a. diaarhea that leads to pasty butt and death if not corrected, or b. constipation which leads to death. Also chicken starter medication may not be useable with quail-- not sure on this as there are some individual variables here but I do beleive there are potential side effects as the medication amounts in the chick starter, or the chemical compound(medication itself) may cause harm to them. I have never seen a gamebird feed by manna pro, so I am unsure if they even offer it, but Purina and Nutrena both do if that helps. Purina's website has a dealer locator option on it to help find the dealer nearest you. Also your feed store may buy the bulk 50# bags and sell it in much smaller packages-- at least mine does, this is helpful if your only feeding a few--- better to pay a little more per pound of food and use all of it than to pay less per pound for a 40 or 50# bag and throw 2/3's of it out after it spoils.

That's what happened to me last time...I had 4 quail chicks, and 50# of food. Water got into the container, and I threw away 49#... But, thanks for the info. I'd rather but another 50# and have healthy chicks than risk what you described! Thanks for the help!
