Medicated Chick Feed Question

Thank you. Gee... Definitely some variation out there!
By the way, did you find that medicated crumble to be so large that you had to grind it down for several weeks? That's what I had to do and then fed it as mash. The chicks' mouths just couldn't negotiate with those large crumbles. Some people on a chicken keeping group said that they ground theirs down as well. But when I use my coffee grinder and am so very careful, It's either all or nothing: I still have big pieces or, if I give it another split second, have almost all powder. My chicks are just about 5 weeks old. Yesterday, I saw that a few of them were finally able to easily eat some of the pieces dry so I thought, Great! and fed it dry. But the next day I saw some still struggling so now I feel like some of them starved yesterday! :( And back to mash it was! And the one thing I'm not crazy about feeding them mash all the time is that some of them, or their broody mother, step in the dishes. And they are in their own coop with some dirt along with their bedding on the floor.
By the way, lastly, I love the look of your set up in this picture. Looks like it might keep dust spread down! What's the material you're using? And is this in the house, or in an area of your coop?

My understanding is that medicated feed needs to be fed until the chicks have been on your ground, so they have time to develop some tolerance to the coccidia in your soil. For example, stopping it while the birds are in a brooder, then having them outside, is the wrong thing.
Some properties, some years, will be severely infested, and other properties never have issues with this parasite.

Yes the Crumbles in the Purina Start and Grow medicated are large.
I ground them in my blender 1 cup at a time for 3 weeks. 20200502_141721_resized.jpg 20200502_141628_resized.jpg 20200502_141758_resized.jpg

Thank you for this info. This is definitely worth researching further.

I agree that they need to be outside on dirt for at least 2 weeks before switching to Non-Medicated feed. GC

And that's the same feed that I've been using. But a couple of days ago I had to get a different brand because the feed store was out of Purina. So they've eaten Manna Pro (which has some Enormous pellets throughout!) for at least one day. I hope that that doesn't cause a digestive problem for them... :/

No it shouldn't be a problem. Both feeds are very similar Corn, wheat and soy based, 18% Protein. They both have Amprolium as the active ingredient. GC
